What is this? I saw this last night for the first time. It has a hard shell, but also has a bunch of little tenticle arms sticking out all the way around it.. a mollusk of some sorts?? The lights were out with just moonlighting. I think the bottom is open and he moves around... the shell looks like its on the top only, like a snail. I dont think its an abalone.. but i really dont know.

I'm not sure, it looks like a scallop. Remove it until you get a definite answer from someone else until you know whether it's safe for youre tank or not.

This should help

Oh yeah, I think greenbeans' right. From your description, you made it seem like a brown flame scallop when you said it had a bunch of tentacles sticking out.

But I think its a stomatella now. They're safe, and a good hitchiker.

It probably is a Stomatella, although I can't really tell from that view. Even though they are in different families, both abalones and trochids (including Stomatella species) may have the "hairs" protruding from under the shell margins. Abalone animals are usually not as tall as the Stomatella animals. Also, all species of abalone have at least a few holes in their shells, while Stomatellas don't.

Cheers,

Don
