What is this?

Sorry for the kind of blurry picture but is this ric splitting? or do I have some sort of alien growing out from under it?

it's a ricordia florida, in the process of splitting...the dark thing coming from under it is a sponge.

Thanks! I was mostly wondering what the thing underneath was. I didnt know sponges got that big in an aquarium. i am used to the little pineapple looking ones.

oh!! I have seen those pineapple looking ones. they are all over my kanyen tree rock...
are they considered pests?
I tried to peel some of them off but they keep comming back...

no! leave them there it's a sure sign of a healthy, mature tank. You're doing something right.

also they smothered one of my zoas...
I got them for over a year and they never make babies...
I wonder if thats why...?

the frag I got year ago

now...you can kinda see the sponge thing on the side...
actually the zoas are less...
