Hello,
I am sick of my t5 fixture and I think that I am going to get a new metal halide, I am new to metal halides and i know that there are the screw in type and the double ended type, could you give me some info on this ballast: AQ2-400PS-120V (pfo)

Thanks

Ryan

bump,

The reason i was wondering about this perticular ballast is i saw it on my local craigslist for 55 bucks here is what the listing says.

"PFO - double ballast - AQ2-400PS-120V - comes with two wiring harnesses, both harnesses are hard wired to the ballast and will need to be hard wired into your lamps. $55"

it looks like a PFO 400w X2 ballast.
PFO isnt in business anymore, but the MH ballasts that they made are fantastic. they are mag ballasts and last forever.
what kind of information are you needing?

for 55$, and if both work, then its a good deal. but you have to think. its a dual 400w ballasts, so thats a lot of electricity. plus its MAG and not electronic. so it will overdrive your bulbs which is a good and bad thing. it gives better PAR, but you wont get more than 12months out of a bulb if that depending on the bulb brand.

they MAG ballast are larger for heat distribution.

oh so it runs two 400watt bulbs, i only have a 75 gal tank so this is overkill right?

yes. i have a 75 and i run 2 - 250W HQI bulbs with actinics and you can grow the crap out of SPS with it.

you can get away with 150's and some T5'S if you want LPS
or just t5'S. you can do 6-8 t5's and grow SPS or 4-6 for softies and LPS.

what do you plan on growing?

$55 bucks for a dual 400 watt PFO ballast is a steal.

I have used one of their 250 watt M80 HQI ballasts for about 6 years now and it still works great.

Personally, I prefer Magnetic MH ballasts over electronic.

Magnetic ballasts tend to be just about bullet proof. You may have to change the capacitor once in a few years, but even the capacitors have lasted longer than the 3 MH Electronic ballasts that I have gone through in only a few years time.

i plan on growing some softies and lps and maybe later on a few lps. So what type of ballast should i be looking for? And what is the difference between the double ended bulbs and screw in, what are their names?

i run 2 400 watt MH, and 2 110 watt VHO super atanics over my 75 gal. and yes alot of ppl say it is over kill but I want the best of both worlds. I want good growth but I also like running 20k XM bulbs. but I also keep only SPS but i have kept softies under these also and they did great.

thanks for the replies, ok so do yall think that if i got that ballast could i only run one of the 400 watt bulbs over my tank, how would that look and would that be enough with some supplemental t5's?

And i was wondering if an industrial ballast would work ok for a reef tank, those are all over craigslist for cheap

Does anybody know if those big lights they have over walmart will run "reef" bulbs and is the voltage 120?
