It is supposed to be a deresa, but it doesn't look like a crocea to me. I have one and the shell is smooth on it. It looks more like a maxima to me? Anyone else?

+4 maxima... just because everyone else is doing it

k..curious so why is everyone else saying it..

+5 maxima... The only reason I say that is because of the ridges on the shell look just like my maxima.

IMO it is a crocea, maximas have larger flutes on the shell and they usually have flutes all the way down the shell.

I am going to add new pics in the morning, it looks nothing like my crocea. What angle of pics would help? We'll get to the bottom of this.

well in the top pic it looks like a crocea...but in the bottom it looks more like a maxima, but now on closer inspection I would hafta change my vote... its mantle looks more like croceas too btw.

Mantle color and shape is not really a reliable way to identify tridacna clams. You need to look at the shape of the shell and the shape/size of the byssus opening. The fact that the scutes are only on the upper portion of the shell indicate that it did not develop scutes when it was younger, which is a crocea, not maxima trait.

You will never find a maxima clam with as round a shell as is posted here.

Honestly, I think that the posted pictures are excellent for the purpose of identification. In my mind, there's no question that's a crocea clam.

The only other picture that you would want is one that you probably can't get; of the bottom of the clam. If it's not attached, that's the only other picture that would really be helpful...
