this is the next thing i need to figure out. DT is 75 gallons, so is the sump. it is a drilled tank. the sump will be in the basement directly under the DT, its probably about 15 feet from the basement floor to the top of the DT, but the sump is going to be on a stand so im not exactly sure how far itll be because we still need to make the stand. i honestly have no idea what to be looking at in terms of a return pump, what do you guys think? i appreciate it! :)

Don't use a Mag as it creates to much heat. Go with a Pan World maybe a PS 100 or150. Super powerful and VERY quiet.

pretty sure the tarpoon is a pressure rated pump. Its on my basement floor shoving watter up 15 or so feet. Its a super quiet pump and doesnt' cost much to run. I noticed a 20 doller average drop in my electric bill after switching from the mag 12.

I recommend a velocity T3 - it is quiet, cheap and efficient. I have one on my skimmer and a T4 for my return. The only downside to these is all their heat goes into the water (for me that is a good thing).

With that much head and that small a tank, I would try to save as much money on the return (both electric cost and pump cost) and spend it on a Tunze or similar for most of the flow. But I agree you should get a pressure rated pump.

alright thanks guys, ill look into these! ok, so definately not a mag? thats good to know, because thats what i figured id be using. best to find out before i buy.

I have a used genx pcx40 I used from my basement sump and it worked great. I'd take 50 for it if you want to go the used cheap route?

Wow, talk about a bunch of different opinions! :D

I run a Pan World 150 from the basement and have been happy with its performance. I will say that it is overpowered for my system (54 gal DT) but I use some of the extra flow for things like RDSB and media reactors. I will also add that I don’t think it’s all that quiet but as it’s in the basement I don’t care.

Just my $.02
