What kind of salt do you use?

I need help figuring out what salt to switch from my Reef Crystals. Does anyone have any suggestions for an SPS tank?

I've used every high dollar mix out there but now days have found IO purple box to be my salt mix. If I need any of the extras I just add them myself

I switched from Red Sea Coral Pro recently because I would always have an alkalinity spike during water changes, same thing when I used Reef Crystals. I now use Fritz Reef Pro Mix and my alkalinity is stable around 9dKh no matter how much water is changed.

Its manufactured in the US and I was sold on the claim that this salt is exceptionally pure due to a stringent manufacturing process.

Hw marine reefer salt. All the levels are around "normal". No super elevated alk or calc levels like Red Sea or reef crystals

I switched from reef crystals to Aqua Vitro Salinity about 6 months ago and I saw great results within just a few weeks worth of water changes

How high did your alk spike and what % water change were you doing? What was the alk before the H2O changes?

I have been using io for a while now. Tried a bucket of Fritz RPM salt and I am going to switch to this salt. Mixes up clean consistent from batch to batch .

I switched from RC to regular IO. Alk is more stable during water changes. Calcium and Mag isn't low enough on new batches to correct manually really. I dose Magnesium on rare occasion to boost the level just a bit.

9 to11 at 1.026 with RCSP

I change about 35% of the water, which ever salt you choose if it doesn't match the tank its going to cause some sort of swing big or small

Dropped IO for Red Sea coral pro after 4 years and with in a month My Sps has started to take off and everything is coloring up much better. I know a lot people have success but I think there is something lacking in IO or extra impurities. I've kept my parameters the same all along (9alk, 440 ca 1350 mg) and do bimonthly 25% changes.

I think one of the main considerations when picking a salt is what alkalinity you want to run your tank at. People have succeeded at various levels but I would say the old school approach was that a higher ALK was better and people aimed for 10-11ish whereas the newer systems running ULNS aim for an ALK closer to the natural levels found in the ocean 6-8ish.

Personally I run ULNS with zeovit and maintain my ALK at 7.5. I could never achieve that if I was using for example IO Reef crystals. I use TropicMarin proReef.

A good comparison of various salts by Jonathan Bertoni can be found here:

So decide where you want to keep you AlK and pick a salt that matches your needs!

I have used Reef Crystals for years. I always test the alkalinity and then add muriatic acid to bring down the numbers. The formula is Alkalinity of new water minus desired alkalinity multiplied by the number of gallons, then multiply by .123. This give you the ml's of acid to add. I never have any spikes when performing water changes.

Since 2011, I used RS blue with great results. 2 weeks ago however I moved to AF Probiotic Salt. Love the program so far and already seeing color changes. I've had a vivid rainbow for over three years, and in the past week, the colors started to come in. Coincidence? Probably, either way I'm watching closely.

Where are you finding the products to buy? I can't find them anywhere

ESV salt. It mixes up very clean and can be used right away in a pinch. I have been using it for years with a lot of success.
