How long do you let the pump running to circulate the water before you can use? Sorry, it might be a dumb question but I have never mix saltwater before and just would like to know. Thanks.
I give it at least 24hrs. Usually by then everything is mixed and stable. More typically 48hrs+ just due to when I actually get around to doing the water change....
Originally posted by Bebo77 thats catalina salt water.. they collect that water in the harbor and then send it through a sand filter.. i used it once.. it gave my fish ick.. will never use it again...
if you have a reef tank you are better off getiing an RODI unit and mixing the salt water yourself... if it fowlr you may not care...
catolina water is fine. there water is send to a lab for testing many elements. it may be a lil high in calcuim, but is that a bad thing. phosphate is .03 or less. nitrate is always undectable. i see no harm using natural sea water. =)
NSW from UCSB now for the last couple of years. I used IO when I was mixing salt. tried Oceanic once and had some major hair alage problems. Went back to NSw and it cleared up. So now all I will use is NSW unless I'm in a really bad bind, then it will be IO or Ocean Pro.
Ive been using NSW from scripps and i see no problems what so ever.
In my FOWLR setup its been up for about 9 or 10 months i wanna say ? The coraline in that tank is like nothing ive ever seen before. No Calcium added, no alk buffer added, no nothing. And the entire back wall and sides of the 100g tank are COVERED in bright purple coraline.
I maintain my tank at <.02 PO4 so doing a water change with anything > than that would seem counter productive if lower PO4 values were the goal of a WC.
I wonder how often they test the water being sold and what they do when it tests higher for PO4's or nitrates or whatever? Based on where they get it there must be some variation.
I'd like nothing better than to have a months supply or so delivered and not have to deal with the hauling salt and mixing, etc.
