What kind of substrate should i use?

LIke the topic stated.. what should i use. Is sand ok? or will they kick it up.

I use it in my tank, no probs. My guy just digs and digs and then sits there....

I used crushed seashells in my mantis tank. They are pretty finely crushed but still rigid enough that he can make burrows that don't collapse. It also doesn't kick up much at all. I also added a tiny layer of live sand to get the critters going. My substrate is only about 2 inches, but since he is smaller than that, I didn't think it would be a problem.
