What kind of turnover for SH/pipe tank?

I know for a reef you like to have 10-30x tunover (at least).

How much would be optimal for a Softie/LPS SH tank?

Thanks,
Cully

I ordered a 480gph pump from a guy on the used forum. he sent me an 1110gph pump. Tank will be around 85 gal total vol. That's around 10x/hour turnover when accounting for head loss. Is this too much IYO???? I can always throttle back if I need to. Looking for help here. Setting up soon!

Thanks!

That would be a fine amount of flow in a tank that size just split up the returns so all the flow is not coming out of one area.

Shouldnt be a problem. No powerheads needed. As far as putting LPS in the tank. I dont think that they will make it. The temp hass to stay down for the horses. Mine sits at 77. I personally wouldnt run my reef tank that low. Mine sits at 80 day and night. JUST MY OPINION

I used to run my SPS tank at 76-78 degrees with no problems. The guy who's mentoring my SH project also has several LPS corals in his tank. He runs only VHO lights, has no heater, and keeps his tank around 75 without any problems. I think as long as the temp is stable, IME, the corals will adjust. The problem seens to be with too much variability in temp as well as other params.

I'm going to run a 4x 39w T5 Tek light. Planning on doing softies and LPS (including Acan Lords).

My friend is very successful at keeping Acans in his SH tank. He has many 100's of Acans under different lights in his "sump room". They are all doing well, but he recommended T5's the most. I like their efficiency and low heat for the SH set up.

i've just started looking into sh/pipes, but from what i gather so far LPS are not a great idea with them due to the stinging capabilities of the corals and the tendency for the fish to cling onto things. am i misunderstanding something? does it just depend on which corals are in question?

I picked up one of those last week. Love it. So much better then my Nova fixture was, I think you will be happy with it.

Yeah, the Tek reflectors are phenomenal compared to the Nova.

What bulbs you going with?

I went with Geissmann's. 2 super actinics, one midday, and one blue plus.

Can't wait to get tank filled. Taking a trip next week. When we get back I'm setting it up. I've got LR cured and ready to go. Also have tons of softies to put in. Can't wait to order my pipes. A friend with experience is going to teach them to eat. Also picked up an HOB refugium for pod supply. Gonna run a fuge under the tank as well.
