What lighting would be better?

I have a 10 gallon nano in my tank under pc's the aqualight 96 watt fixture. I found another lighting fixture online with T5's but it's only 4 bulbs at 56 total watts. Is the t5's output stronger then the 96W of pc? I'm not familiar at all with the T5's.

If they have high quality individual reflectors, then it is pretty darn powerful. However, with 96 watts over a 10 gallon, you can keep pretty much anything other than acro and clams so only upgrade if you are itchen for them.

I have even seen montipora grow just fine under that lighting.

I would go w the T-5's, like nmprisons they need good reflectors. They last longer than PC's do's also. IMO PC lamps are garbage, they fade so quickly. I've used 55w's and 96w's, I got sick of buying new lamps every 6 months though!

Here are tyhe specs on the lighting I was looking into.....

24" Standard Output T5 Fixture - great for nano reefs
[24"sofixt.]

Our standard output T5 lighting systems are the perfect choice for all marine and freshwater aquariums. They also work extremely well when used for Refugium systems and Nano Reef aquariums. Made from a powder coated aluminum case, it both vents heat out of the strip as well as gives it the best water resistance compared to other materials. Our lighting fixtures are famously known for being and STAYING cool even when turned on for prolonged periods of time. T5 lighting offers the most beautiful and vibrant lighting compared to power compacts, VHO and the traditional T12's making it the ideal choice to show off all of the beauty of a saltwater aquarium.

Specs:
*Ultra compact and slim at only 2 inches high, 7 1/2 inches wide and 24 inches long.
*Very light weight at only 3.25lbs.
*56watts.
*Corrosive resistant matte finished aluminum.
*Rapid start electronic ballast emits very low heat, NO noise and vibrations.
*(2) 10,000k daylight bulbs and (2) 03 true actinic blue (all bulbs included).
*One wire only, with 2 separate switches for complete control of all blue, all white or "ALL ON" settings.
*Hinged tank mounts, can also adjust for different lengths (included).

I sent them a question asking about the reflectors and also about the S.O. bulbs (standard output) because for replacemnt bulbs at the drs website they only sell H.O. bulbs (high output).

If I have to add any reflectors to it then I don't think it's worth it even though the fixture is $99. At the drs they have the nova fixture on sale for $159 plus it is 96W of H.O. and includes 2 lunar lights. Only bad thing is, I think these fixtures can be run without a cooling fan, that is why they advertise NO NOISE (the german fixtures don't include fans either). The nova includes a cooling fan and it has no mention about noise. I currently run 2 tanks with aqua C remoras and I can't even imagine adding to the noise.

look more into the nova fixture. we run it on our 20 H and get great color and growth out of all our acros. it is all sps, softies melt :)

edit: the fan isnt very loud at all. if running t5HO i'd suggest a fixture with a fan to help with bulb life etc...

I was looking at their 24" fixture. Are the legs adjustable to 20". Does the fan make any noise? All other T5 fixtures don't come with a cooling fan and state that their fixtures run cool.

yes the legs are adjustable. the fan makes a very slight hum. with the skimmers you wont even hear it. as for other fixtures not running fans. I believe aquatinics and ati does. check grims numbers about tek vs ati :)

Are you going to run sps in your nano? What about your larger tank?

You never know....it's mostly curiosity and just checking out the options......I've been thinking of doing different things. Like selling my pair of black and white occelarius and moving my Onyx percs from my nano to my larger tank. Using the nano as a grow out tank for frags. Or just keeping everything the same till I get a larger tank.

why not just slap a 70w mh retro in there. thats what i am doing in my 10 and loves it

Way too much heat. Uses more electricity and bulb life is shorter and more expensive. By what I've read T5 is the way to go. I read bulb life is also 15-18 months, I've even read up to 2yrs.

yea your talkin about a 10 gallon tank and they dont makeT-5 bulbs small enough to fit? unless you know something i dont know. 70w of halide is not too hot cuz i have one on my 10gal and only need a 2'' fan to keep everything cool and my heater kicks on once or twice a hour.

Those are all valid points, but you can't beat the shimmer of the MH.

Very true.......I have 250W HQI's over my 45 gal. Gotta love the shimmer effect but it easily heats up my tank. AC must be running full blast in the summer or my temp goes in the 90's.
