what lighting

going to build a hood for my 10g tank i just started the tank and hope to turn it into a reef tank over time the inside of the hood will be 20x10. cost is a factor so i'm thinking of going with 2 18" floresents.
any other options or sugestions would be great

Check out the 20" Coralife 96w Quad Aqualights. They are very bright and will let you keep most corals. I had one on my 10gal. until Friday. You will also not need a hood w/ them. The only downside I found w/ mine was the fans were noisy. There is a thread talking about changing them out. If your dilligent and check the classifieds often, you can find them for around $50 used.

seems like i could install them into the hood pretty easily. i definatly need to have a hood because of the cat

That would definitely work, especially for your application. I was talking aboutthis

It sets only about an inch or so above your tank and pretty much covers the entire top. But I don't know how persistant/curious your cat is so it may not work in your situation.

that looks good alsoand might work, building a hood should be pretty easy, but it doesn't seem like the kits come with fans and i'm not sure where to get them
