What makes a PH probe fail?

Anyone have an idea why my PH probes are not lasting? I am on my second one in about a year now, and i have been having to calibrate it weekly for a few weeks now. I must be doing something wrong here????? Is it ok to completely submerge them, or should i be keeping the rubber end with the wire above the water line? Something special i should be cleaning it with maybe? At $50 a pop, this is getting a little old.

I wouldn't completely submerge it, nor would I clean it with anything more than water or vinegar.

I think it may be because of it being submerged. I mounted it where the top is out of the water, and now after drying out all day the calibration has gone back to the original place it was set at before it started going nuts.

My mom is a chemist at OU and she says that there is pottasium cloride iside the probe that some how gets used up or just leaves. she says at work she has injected pottasium cloride in the probe to make it work again....heh i dont know myself, but thats what she says.

try doing a google for POTASSIUM CHLORIDE PH PROBE i did and got some interesting results but didnt feel like reading stuff at the moment.
