What makes this Potters different?

First want to say this LFS is not your typical big chain or even large local guy. This is basicly just a "Home Base' for his Aquarium maintenace biz. Hes able to qt fish for his clients on a larger scale etc... Hes open 6hours a week for the public.

Hes been trying to import a few Angels and dwarf angels. His mortality rate has been rough at best (most all other fish do great i.e. clwons, gobys, tangs etc..). Cant seem to get the angels to eat. They act great for the first 3-5 days then things usually go south. Hes tried all different suppliers. I got a 1.5 in Emperador that only went 3 days. But he took him out of the bag before I got there. We left him in QT. Then I packed him up again 2 days later.

Well hes at wits end and wanted to try one more supplier before he stops getting Angels all together. He ordered just one Angle, a Potters per my request!
This time we agreed I would take him from the cooler still in the shipping bag. It takes the fish Mon morning to Wed afternoon in the bag to get to me. This is a huge reason for the low success rate. Yes we (HI) are only a 6 hour flight from CA BUT we have a HUGE massive QT center for all animals (only on OAHU). Not to long ago dogs would stay there for 8 weeks when imported in. Now 3 days. Anyway thats on another island and ofcourse theyre only open 8 hours a day. Which in turn leaves the fish there over night while they observe 24hrs and ship the next morning to us a 20 min flight.

This is where it gets fun. I get the call, drive to the LFS 10mins there 10 mins back. Do the suggested acclumation and get him in qt. 4 days past and hes not interested in anything. The finest fish food was like annoying debris in his face!! At this time Ive read my self to sleep 3 nights in a row looking for the magic formula to get this most amazing looking fish to eat!!

I was changing the rocks out every couple of days for fresh algae. He was grazing but not enough. on the 4th day a.m. hes acting very territorial! So I mix up some garlic and mysis dump it in and he goes after it like a rabid dog. Almost as he hasnt eaten in 5 days!!!! We're on our 3rd day of eating pretty much anything I put in the tank. Will start qt meds in a few more days.

I do have a question what was the difference?

1. New supplier?
2. Taking him right from the shipping cooler? (LFS does too)
3. Pretty big 2.5ish in. (others where smaller)
4. Stayed true to the garlic? used it on all feeding for the 5 days and stilldo
5. Combination of the above?
6. Ofcourse hes eating hes "MY" kick *** Potters!

Probbly the algae you provided and garlic mix on food. When my potters hit my lfs all he would eat was brine shrimp. He was there almost a month and they got him eating mysis.

2 days in the bag is a pretty rough trip. I'm surprised much of anything survives that.

Just curious though, why would you buy a fish that is endemic to the islands you live on from California?

was wondering the same thing :)

Many people do get their potters to eat, and they may do 'well' for weeks or months, but then one day they're done !

I forgot to mention that. I ment to post why but started rambling on and left it out:debi:

1) Availability. You wouldnt believe how hard it is for us to get some sought after local fish. Racoons, wrasses, tangs you can find all day long Potters very hard. I just dont have much options. Most HI shippers only ship to wholesalers. My LFS only orders from HI when he gets inverts because we cant import inverts at all.

2) Price. I get the fish at wholesale:thumbsup:

3) Price I dont pay shipping or do anything but say "Ill take one of those on your next order!"

Wow!...that is incredible! lol, the pool does have a killer view...is the Oar House still on the beach? I think the oyster shooters were .25 cents each back then, they were the best...
Jimmy's still in Kapa'a?

I'll take you up on that at some point!

Thanks,

TK
