what NOT to stock in a shallow tank??

I might get to setup my monster 115"x48"x15" (exterior) sooner than I expected and that got me thinking about what I can stock it with. I'm interested in doing more of a lagoon/softie tank with lots of smaller fish and a few larger show specimens. I know that some fish need a water column to promote spawning, etc. and I figure for just day to day inhabitant sanity there must be some restrictions given the size.

For (extreme) shallow tank folks like me, are there certain fish we have to avoid given the water columns we offer? I recall from my freshwater days different fish tending towards and utilizing different elevations of the tank. With a short tank like mine (say 13.5" before substrate) are there fish that will feel like they are in a padded room and go CRAZY because they don't have the height they need? I'm providing ample horizontal room (~38 sq. ft.) but are there still specimens to avoid because of the vertical factor??
