I was in Long Beach this past week and stopped in at Age of Aquariums and saw this beautifully colored Flame Angel. I have never seen one that was colored with so much yellow in the body area like this one.

I am upset, because I told them to hold it for me and I was going to have them over night it once I got back into town. Well, they ended up selling it. I spoke with the owner and he said that he was at the wholesaler's today and wasn't able to find one with that bright of a yellow color. He also stated that he hasn't seen many that color in the trade. Does anyone know what region this color is from or where I might be able to get one with this color?

no clue on the region but I know they had a real nice one at discount(about a week ago) and...of all places I believe they had a nice one at the Petco on I17 and happy valley, I remember being stunned how nice it was for petco stock. I can swing by tomorrow and see if it is still there since I work 2 min away. Honestly cant remember how much yellow the body had but Ill take a pic.

That would be great. The Flame Angel is beautiful either way, but I really like the bright yellow body. If contrasting with the bright blue tail and the red. It would be great to get one locally.

ok did a quick bit of research and apparently the theory is that Hawaiian flame angels differ from xmas island angels, the Xmas island are the ones to have thicker black bar and more yellow/orange on the sides, Hawaiian seem to have thinner bars and more red.

Thanks, this is good to know, now I can start asking around for the ones that come from xmas islands.

Just read this on LIve Aquaria

There are slight differences in both coloration and markings of this species based on the location of collection. Flame Angelfish from the Central Pacific include both Marshall Islands and Christmas Island. Marshall Island Flame Angelfish are redder in color, with thicker black bars running vertically down the body. Christmas Island Flame Angelfish are normally red/orange coloration with thin black bars running vertically down the body. Flame Angelfish from Cebu are red/orange with undefined black bars and a tint of yellow in between the bars. Flame Angelfish from Tahiti are rarely collected and are blood red in coloration and possess very little to no yellow. It is important to note that these color descriptions are a general guideline. Please expect variation among each fish. The price differences between different varieties reflect the difference in collection, transportation and importation expense.

hm, funny how they say the xmas isalnd ones have thinner bars and others say they have thicker. I guess there is always variation even within a specific region.

The flame at Petco was gone already yesterday but I will keep an eye out for one with more yellow on the sides.

Contact Kevin at PIA, pacificislandaquatics dot com. He'll hook you up I'm sure. He has a couple on site from Christmas Is but they aren't yellow body like you're seeking and both are a little different color. I think it all depends on the fish more than location. Jmo
