IHeck Im now recovering from a partial tank crash. I put my Kalk reactor on my Aquacontroller and screwed up the code. Used on at 03:30 Off at 03:02 instead of :32. My ph was 9.6. All my sps slimed like crazy, only lost a tricolor and some expensive and rare wrases.

My BK is still pulling out crap. This happened on Monday.
That stinks... I'm getting ready to bring my kalk reactor on line, and will have to make sure to remember to add that "safety net" line of code as well.

From what I have read, you should avoid the horizontal DI canisters, they are not as efficient as the vertical ones. I would just get the one from Aquaworld.

i think thats what im going to do if i can find nothing else or if no one else can.Im kind of iffy on buying somehting i can phishicly see in the first place.

X2, the horizontal DI's tend to channel water.

but how much of a diffrence would the horizontal make over the non. big enough to were i shouldnt purches this or not really to were it would be ok and better water then i have now.

throw away the 5th stage though. with this one you have 3 gal on demand which is nice.

below is the 60$ one... you don't want it. it's junk

notice how the prefilters are not replaceable. cheap junk. don't waste your $.

I'm using the one listed in the first posting, and am very happy with it so far. Doesn't have a TDS meter...but they sell it, and will ship at reduced or free....

You could also re-orient them vertically as they're not all locked into place. The DI chambers just sit on top of the unit...

I would definetely get a unit that has a brand new membrane and that the tds is hitting 0.

You also have the option of lugging 5 gal. ro/di water from walmart until you can get a good water filter. It's work and not fun but it can be done and i used to do it.

i think tonight im going to place a order for a ro/di unit the one i posted. ill just flip the di to be vertical not horizontal. its better then what im useing now.

I used to get water from Giant Eagle at their fill your own jug thing since I didn't have to worry about having all the extra jugs around but after Stray and Rays TDS research I switched to Walmart water. I'm trying to decide on an ro/di system myself. There is no chance of me doing a direct auto top off (tank is the farthest thing in the house from a water source) and I don't really have much room to put a brute garbage can. Would I be able to put a top off on a 5 gal bucket and just switch it from one bucket to another as needed or should I just get one with the 3gal holding tank? and use that to fill buckets? I think i might be able to convince the g/f a little easier if it's a spigot she can drink from but would like to hear opinions.

I am between one like the filterdirect link above with the tank or the bulkreefsupply 5 stage.

That's how I make mine, so yes.

I've got a 30 something gallon rubbermaid trash can that I put my top-off in... It's nice to have that much on hand at all times, just so long as it doesn't sit for weeks unused...

how would i do a auto top off on the underside of my tank with a 20 long under there for a sump. and theres no way i can run the actul ro/di unit by the tank since its in the liveing room.

Matt - while I prefer a 5 stage RO/DI unit with the vertical DI canister, here is a very good 4 stage unit for $99.99 plus about $10 shipping:

ebay

The seller is the same guy who runs BulkReefSupply - and it is the unit they sell on their web site for $129.99.

I used to have one of the cheaper units from ebay with the horizantal DI canisters. It was ok, but not as good as the BulkReefSupply units. And there were channelling issues with the DI canister. plus the DI canister on the cheap units even if switched vertical is much smaller than the ones you see here .

Speaking from experience - don't buy something just becuase its cheap - you probably will pay more in the long run replacing it. Spend the extra $10 - $20 bucks to get something that will serve you better in the long run.

The Bulkreefsupply folks are top notch - I have bought a bunch of stuff from them and they have great customer service, low prices and cheap shipping. They have a forum in the vendor section here and are very responsive
