Just trying to get some info on a QT. From what I've read they are beneficial and if I can set one up before I start adding fish I'd like to. So.....

What size tank do you use for a QT?
How many fish can or do you QT at once?
Do you keep it up and running all the time or only when you have fish coming in?
Do you put LR in the tank? tank water from your display?
What type of filtration do you use?
Anything else I'm missing?

thanks for the info.

I have a 20L with a rena xp3 canister filter that runs all the time. I QT'd 4 fish when my display tank was running empty to clear out ich, without any issues.

I use a standard 55 gallon with a CPR bak pak skimmer and a small filter with carbon. I keep a few pieces of live rock in the tank.

I don't normally put more than a couple fish in my QT at once.

I think you'll get some extremely varied responses on here. Could you tell us a bit about the display tank, as well as the types of fish you want to keep?

That will help us determine the size and equipment you'll need.

I've done both a large tank (60g) and a small one (15g).

Prefer the small tank 100 times over! So much easier to keep the water quality up. It has a heater, small powerhead for circulation, and hangon Aquaclear. Liverock rubble inside the tank.

MY QT is a 30 long. The smaller they are the more manageable. Trying to do a 100% water change on a 55 allon tank is a lot harder then an 18 or 30 gallon tank.

Here is what i do...

I have a 55QT with an Emperor 400 on it, a 36 QT w/ Emperor 280 and a 20 QT with an Emperor 280 on it. I would just make sure that your HOB Filter has a media to keep bacteria alive like the wheel on the Emperor filters.

I have a Powerhead and heater on them all and keep them running all the time. YOu need to keep the filters running at all times to be most effective.

I pull water out of the QT then add my display tank water for waterchanges and I have a 5 gallon bucket in the fish room with fresh RODI and top off the tanks manually every day.

What fish to keep where depends on the size of the tank and the size and aggressiveness of the fish. I got a conpsic so it was alone in the 55. I've had 3 pygmy angels in the 36 and a wrasse and angel or tang in the 20...

THis is just what I do but I definitly think you should QT. Fish do sooo much better!

Much like the above poster, I keep 2. One is a 29g and the other 55g. They do need to be maintained ongoing. Even if I dont have a fish in them, I throw some food in there occasionally to keep the biofilter going. I use HOB filters as well as sponge filters in them both.

Depending on size of fish and needs determines which tank.
