What size standard tank for new build?

Hey All,

I am planning out my future build, probably won't start until closer to the end of the year. I currently have a 17g rimless nano, and have had 55g, 120g shallow, and 29g Biocubes before.

I love my nano, but I know within 6 months I'm going to be itching to get something bigger, mainly because Tangs are my favorite fish. Whichever tank I buy, I want to be able to house multiple tangs ideally.

My question: What are peoples recommendations on standard tank sizes in the 90-180g range? Ideally closer to 100g.

I like the length of the standard 125g, but how is the 18inch depth (front to back) for aquascaping reefs? Anyone have experience with these tanks?

Any other recommendations? I generally buy my tanks used, so more standard/common tank dimensions are preferred. Any pictures of your set-ups and experiences with them would be helpful!

For tangs, the bigger the better, so a 180 is the best choice for them. For you, it sounds like something smaller is better. So look for something longer, so they have room to roam. I'd be more tempted to sacrifice tank height over depth. And lower height makes it easier/cheaper to light.

Makes sense. I do like the convenience of the 125g standard, its 6 foot which would be good for the Tangs. Also, its a very common tank, so if I went second hand theres usually a bunch for sale around.

My only worry is the depth (front to back) only being 18 inches. Seems like it would be limiting aquascaping wise. Man, I wish I didnt get rid of my 6' x 2' x 17" shallow reef 120G when I moved a few years back lol.
