Looking to set up a new 180 tank. Just need to know what size return pump (GPH?() is needed for the sump. Tank will be RR. I'll have an ASM G-3 skimmer in the sump.

For my 180 I'm running a panworld 100px-x(1270gph). I'm also using it on my 125, but it's dialed back some. I also run it on my 110+75 I have plumbed together.... Good pump, not too expensive, and pretty quiet IMO.

600-1100 gph after head loss(h.l. calc. on home page of R.C.)

Seems a little low, I'd be looking for 1500+ GPH after head loss.

sump will sit directly below tank, so about 3 feet of head loss. The Quiet one 5000 is nearly double the price and double the watts, but is only 200 more GPH than the quiet one 4000. Would the 4000 be enough?

i believe the target feed for an asm g3 is 2-300 gph, so i say shoot for 600 gph on the return and try to split it in half and feed the asm directly. i'll agree with joedirt on an eheim.

Eheim 1262 for a return and run a CL. you never did mention the size of your sump?

What I have on my 180g

Dont get a pan world 100 px x Its too damn noisy on my Oceanic 180. Its also too much flow. Im gonna replace with the Ehiem 1262. Slower flow, energy efficient and less microbubbles.

I like the Dolphin Ampmaster 3000. It has great flow, and it's the desing type that if you restrict the flow (on the effluent), it actually cuts back on electricity usage. I run both the return and an ETSS skimmer of off this one pump. That type of skimmer requires a monster pump, and this one does it, with plenty of power left for the return. Quiet too.
