What tang is this?

I picked him up today. So far my 2 yellows are showing some aggression, so I shut the lights off, added lots of food, and rearranged the rocks. Maybe I can pick up another tang of some kind tomorrow to help spread the aggression as well.

After looking at all kinds of pictures of Bariene Tangs, and looking at mine, I'm pretty sure it's a Bariene.

I'd agree, it looks like a bariene but without a good sideways shot it's hard to tell.

ive seen some order sheets beofre and i remember assorted eels, and assorted wrasses as a option from the wholesalers, the tang could of been like that for the lfs not to know what they was getting

He's still shy, especially with the two yellow tangs, which makes photos impossible right now. However, he has distinctive white lips, which leads me to the conclusion that he is a Bariene.

I picked up a pacific sailfin tang today and he put the yellows in their place. Aggression towards the bariene now consists of the occasional fin flash, that's about it. The bariene is still very shy though.

Once again that is not a BARIENE TANG. It lacks the black spots behind the eyes and BARIENES NEVER had have any type of lines on their body in any stage of their life. Juvi or adult will not have those lines and by the time they lose their juvi color they will have the black spots. Your fish is an acantharus so it will have some Bariene characteristics, but it is definitely not a Bariene.

Possibly A. nigroris, if it has two dark spots on the base of the dorsal and anal fins it is.

Apparently the fish came from Sumatra if that helps. I really think it is a bariene though. There are some local reefers in my area that have Barienes they got from liveaquaria as juveniles and they said theirs looked exactly the same.

That is not a bariene tang but a fowleri tang (acanthurus fowleri). The main difference between bariene and fowleri, besides the presence of the black spot, is the dorsal fin shape when it's fully extended. On the bariene tang, the part of the dorsal fin that connect to the head is taller. On the fowleri, it's not as tall. Of course, the adult colorations are slightly different.

You just might be right. I can't see a black spot and the dorsal isn't as tall. Either way though, it was a bargain for $50.

Exactly. $50 is a very good price for a fowleri. I have a bariene which I picked up for $90 at 4", which I thought was a really good price. It's now around 6" and showing beautiful adult colorations.

im pretty sure its a dussumeiri.. It has a white caudal spine which the fowleri's dont. HArd to tell by the pic though. Dussumeiri's, blochii, and xanthopterus are easy to tell apart (now anyway.. lol)

I guess if it doesn't have a black spot behind the eye, then it's not a bariene. I can't really tell if it does or doesn't, from that pic. To me the lips looked kind of light in the pic, which made me think bariene. My next choice would be dussemieri.

It's definitely a juvenile Acanthurus, not a Ctenochaetus species. I'm just stuck between either a Bariene, a Dussimieri, or a Fowler's.

I think pacific island aquatics is right. it's a duss. i missed the white caudal spine when i thought it was a fowleri. though, the giveaway for duss is the yellow stripe across the eyes, which won't develop until the adult stage.

it's definitely not a bariene. bariene has a black eye spot, even during the juvi stage, albeit faint.

let us know in 1 year which one it is!

I'll be sure to keep updating the thread. Looking at the fish in person though, the spine isn't really white. It's a darker color, and is surrounded in a navy blue color.
