What the hell is going on

I got this zoa frag from a lfs and it has been growing quite nicely. Now it has this weird growth and it looks like it is trying to reach out. Anyone ever seen this, should I chop them off, and if so can I just do it in the tank? Any suggestions.

I'd say sponge. Seen a little like that in my tank. I always pulled it off. Anything comes close to my zoanthids, that's not another zoanthid, gets relocated.

Yup...sponge. I have the same stuff. I pull it out and it grows back in a month or so.

are these a bad thing? and what causes them. Anyone have any links that have info on these.

It's just sponge. It grows in the ocean.
You can do a RC seach, or a google search.

It can grow up and over the zoanthids and smother them.

Just pull it off and toss it.

I remove them off my rock when i do my h20 change. Just get the hose close enough to remove and commence.
