what the hell was i thinking? angel in sps tank

I have lots of asterias. I have always thought they were beneficial.

Some are fine, and others will eat corals. I am not sure how to tell the difference b/t the good ones and the bad ones --- besides catching them in the act.

As for dwarfs in an SPS tank, it is a risk that I have been willing to take -- like the dwarfs too much.

My friend removed yesterday a small adult emperor ...raised since 2 in juv... unfortunally started to aquire taste for acans (angel's caviar). Some wise movements in the dark and now the fish will be in my FOWLR...(hoping to pairing with my small emp also...otherwise will be sold in lfs ) so even well feed (this one is thick as a 3/4 of inch... a lot for a 7 inch fish) this one is just another one to be counted as removed due coral attack ... unfortunally ...

I didnt mean to infer they were bad. I meant to infer they were EVERYWHERE!!!:lmao:

lol i have the same problem. i just pick them out if i am in the mood..

as for the dwarfs, i have a flame angel who i have only seen pick at my sps once. so i added an additional feeding to my schedule and have yet to see him pick at them again.

Is he doing damage to the coral? Mine nip, but never seem to harm anything. I see yellow tangs nip at sps all the time. In fact, any grazing fish will have incidental nipping. I think that a big deal is made out of nipping, when in a large aquarium with lots of sps, it doesnt really harm anything.

Ditto, observe your corals, and see if it does serious damage. They will learn to retract their polyps during the day, as they do in the wild, and in most cases, the nipping won't be any real threat. FWIW, I have an Emperor and a Regal that both occasionally nip. I've had them for about a year and a half and my SPS have thrived. The only corals I have not been able to keep are acan lords and micros...so it came down to the question of what I would rather have, angels or these corals...easy answer :)

When I started up my SPS dominated 220g, I thought I would never be able to keep angels again. To my surprise, I've been keeping a Flame, Chrysurus, Goldflake, and a pair of Bellus angels for almost 2 years now. The flame is a nipper for sure. But not so bad as to have ever done any real damage.

I once added a beautiful Australian Elgeance that was devoured in hours (the wife NEVER lets me forget that one) but my SPS are doing just fine.

Now my entry in the, "What the hell was I thinking" category, is the small Semilarvatus Butterfly I recently tried. WHOA! He was indeed bellying up to the buffet that was my 60 + SPS colonies.

Miraculously, I was able to catch him without a major tear down!

My idol didnt touch anything till yesturday when i got 6 heads of wild aussie duncan. Sps-no prob, lps so far no prob till the duncan. Hes ripping it to pieces! Do you think my wife will let me buy a new acro tommorrow to make up for it?

Semi-larvartus Butterfly?? You like to live dangerously for sure!

Matthew

Yeah... I had been reading about some daring souls trying it with mixed success. After putting him in the night before, I went to bed hopeful. When I awoke, the dinner bell had already been rung.

After 3 hours of frustration trying to catch the thing, that experiment came to an end.

problem solved.

to be fair he wasnt doing any real damage besides no polyp extention. In fact I have seen acros that were beeing niped actually get better color because all the areas that are normally shaded by polyps get plenty of light.

I just would rather have him out of there.

thanks for all the input
