What the @#$@!#! My xenia is smoking!

Well, I know it's not smoke, but what is it doing?!?!? This is the 14 gallon I set up today for the newly hatched shark. Pulsing xenia was fine all day and tonight I turned off the circulating pump, tossed in some fresh squid hoping to entice the shark to eat, and within minutes the xenia was doing this. Once the "smoke" stopped coming out of this section, it started coming out of other sections. It's not giving off something harmful, is it? Sheesh!

Whew - OK, thanks. I was afraid it was sending out some chemical warfare or something harmful that would pollute the water and kill the baby shark. Strange, though... I've had pulsing xenia in all my tanks for 8 years now and have NEVER seen this. The xenia does spread like wildfire but I've never seen the "smoke" before. Then again, it's not often that I have all the circulation pumps off in any tank, either, so maybe that's the key factor.

Earlier that day I had moved the xenia-covered rock into the newly set up biocube so maybe it's the change in lighting that prompted the spawning? Or perhaps the xenia really gets turned on by squid - I've never fed that before! Is it an aphrodisiac? :)

There's nothing else in that tank for any new "spawn" to attach to so it was a wasted effort on the xenia's part, but it was a cool experience (now that I know what it was). Thanks for always being here!

with the xenia spawning a would do a small waterchange

Good idea. Since the tank was only set up yesterday with fresh water I wasn't going to do one for a few days but after all that "smoking" last night I probably should sneak one in before I head out for the day.

I've got a sponge in there (that I always keep in another sump to help kickstart new tanks) and one of the chambers is full of polyfill for mechanical filtration and I also tossed a bag of carbon in one of the rear chambers but water change would really make me feel safer. Thanks for the reminder.

Woah, if my conversion is right that's a +1,000 gallon tank - did you give him to a public aquarium? I'm guessing you had him two years because at that point you couldn't provide him the size of environment he needed - must have been sad to let him go but you did what was best for him/her.

Do you remember what you used to entice him to eat when he was a pup? I'm dissecting a squid and going for the soft, spongy part of his innards... hope that appeals to him.
