sean If you can, put it in a crack about mid level with a gentle flow. Your tank looks very imature. It might just be that the water paramaters are out of wack which is affecting the lil bugger.
Dont risk it, get a net breeder type of set up and keep it safe. Spot should be at the fringe of the lighting area, likely a front or rear corner. You may even need to sheild it.
fwiw: I have used pond planter baskets, attached styrofoam with tie wraps, and let the baskets float around the tank. Put mess cover over the top to block a portion of the light (pond basket material worked, get an extra ). Looks silly as all get out, but it works like a champ while they are recovering.
