Several months ago, I came home with a 3" gold crocea -- my brain skipped a beat and thought "deresa" requirements. Well, I figured I would give it a couple of weeks to see how it liked my lights and if it didn't, I would find a new home. I placed it near the top on a nice friendly shelf and fed him lots. It dug in, put on some growth and otherwise looked very happy, so it stayed.
3 months ago I had to break down the tank and of course the rock didn't go back in the same way. The poor clam was perch precariously on the side, so I sliced the basal threads and managed to coax him into lifting his foot so I could move him. This spot was even more secure and stable than the first. He promptly put his foot down and went back to being happy, but never put out any basal threads.
About 3 weeks ago he stopped looking so happy -- he wasn't as open as he should be, and he lifted his foot. I replaced my bulbs, thinking it may be a light issue (they were 6 months old.)
Since the new bulbs went in, he hasn't looked much happier and I had sadly decided to find him a new home with MH's. But, he did put his foot down. A couple of times I caught him moved to the edge of the rock. I gently moved him back. He is over 3 1/2" now, so he has been putting on some decent growth.
Today, he jumped off -- breaking a coral and probably scaring the heck out of the clowns that host in it. I moved him to a spot with more light, but left him on the sand bed. The new spot has some pretty brisk flow. He dug in immediately. Suddenly, he looks blissfully happy! What gives? I don't *think* he can get enough light down there, but it's hard to argue when he looks so good. I don't think the new bulbs are that much of an issue in terms of acclimation, even if I did switch from half 7100/10000k's to half 03 actinic/10000k's.
So... did I stick with my plan to find him a home with better light but less food... or do I let him decide what he likes?
