What to put in my refugium

I now have the tank *somewhat* up and running and looking for suggestions of what to put in my refuge area.

I am looking at some form of algae such as chaeto or similar but wanted to know what YOU have and what you would put in a new tank if you had the chance. Do I need a sand bed and a deep sand bed at that? Which algae would you recommend and what lighting to suit?

Thanks. Steve

Everyone has different opinion on what should be in a refugium. I would just pick what macros you want to grow and keep what you need to grow them. I personally I have cheato and a deep sand bed. Use to also have some rock but it was trapping to much. I plan on adding mangrove. If not I would get rid of the DSB.

How deep would you make the sand bed?

Mine is 6 inches maybe a little more. I would not go less personally.

I personnaly put a little sand rock rubble and whatever macro you will be growing. (I use cheato).

My tank has a 4" deep sand bed. Do you think a 6" bed in my refugium would be worth it?

I would not do a DSB again if I was not planing on keeping mangrove. A lot will debate what the correct DSB height should be. Ultimately it is up to you I prefer to stay on 6'' or higher but 4 can work.

I really like algae scrubbers. I have two on part of my sump system. They are reducing nitrates very efficiently. Grows algae very well.
