This is not my picture but he looks just like this. Got him when I ordered some scarlets. His has a big claw so I put him in the sump. Is he agressive and will he get very big?

I have several of this type. Thay are zebras from hawai. I have scarlets, blues, and
zebras. The zebras are the most aggresive. Mine maxed out at 1". The zebras are always the victors in the hermit crab wars. Often I will watch a zebra kill a blut or a scarlet for there shell, try on the new shell and decide that his or her old shell was better .
I like the blues the best.

Are you sure it's a zebra? I haven't seen any that look like this. Plus this guy has a very big claw that the zebras I have seen don't have.

I'm really not sure what you have there. The zebra hermits typically seen for sale are a Calcinus species, like C. laevimanus or C. seurati. The site I use to identify hermits didn't have any matches, so I'm stumped. If you'd like to check yourself, here's the address: http://www.recif.be/article/hermit.htm

Do you have any idea where it originally came from?

Just got back. Your second question got me to take a closer look at my zebras which are rapidly becoming the only hermits in the tank. I went to the crab identification site that sirbooks gave us and found the matching picture of mine,
Calcinus Seurati .
Yours does look different the stripes on the legs are different and the smaller claw is way smaller.

Zebra Hermits are Left handed. This guy is right handed.
Look into Mexican Hermits. I had one that looked like him. Came from Baja, it was semi-reef safe, but did attack snails. I ended up removing him cause he was getting too big and knocking things over.
