What Web Cam Do You Use With Your Apex?

HI everyone.

Recently bought an apex and have been wanting to set up a web cam so I can view my tank 24/7. The manual recommends using the Linksys WVC54GCA cam but I was wondering about what other options are open to me. What different cameras has everyone else used with relative ease that could be an option for me?

Thank you!!

I've thought about it. I even went so far as to make my foscam visible on my dashboard internally. After I thought about it and since my tank is in my living space I thought it might be best not to have it hooked up. I'd have to expose the video externally to get it to be visible from my Apex on the net and I didn't think the world is ready to see me in my undies every morning while I'm making my coffee.

Hahaha, possibly not. I didn't know it would be public tho. Kind of thought you would need a specific IP address to access it. Mine would be placed on my computer desk which is right next to the tank, less then 5 inches away so I would get a nice up close view through the left side of the glass. Want it mainly to check on the tank when I go on vacation in the summer. Also to watch the auto feeder I plan to get before vacation as well. And I guess just to show all my friends at the bar!

I just installed apex fusion how do I hook up a webcam to it? can one plug right into my apex? or would I need my computer near my tank?

I don't know if but maybe there is a water proof web camera, there are a couple of water proof cameras I am looking at. but I don't know if they have web cam capabilities

finall had time to mess with the dericam. got everything to work in the home network and remotely see through it using Static WAN IP. you must first log into your router and do port forwarding. i still cannot control the functions of zooming and rotating. it only scans around the room and i can only stop it when it faces where i want it. the software does not allow me to pick which DNS service i want. so it looks like i will have to go with DYNDNS and get a account set up unless someone out there know how i can do it with a different DNS service. any help would be appreciated

HD Foscam, but I don't use it with the Apex, doesn't seem like a real reason to use it with Apex's interface.

The apps and desktop browser interface works much better.

Here's a cap from right now as Kessils are ramping up...

My Apex is getting delivered today and I was thinking about adding a cam. An underwater webcam would be sick.

If you can afford it, get a Dropcam. Takes 5minutes to set up, works wirelessly, and it's extremely easy to use. No networking or programming required. All in HD too.
You can access it from anywhere too.
Forget trying to tie into the Apex Dashboard as it only supports crappy video anyway.

I didn't think the world is ready to see me in my undies every morning

People pay for that sort of thing...

Also, at least one in ten people take a photo of their tank in their undies and post it online completely ignoring the fact that we can see them in the reflection. :)

D Link Wireless DSC-930L..

I read about other people using them so gave it a try, unfortunately I couldn't get it to work with the Apex basic or fusion using IE and Chrome.
So I kept it simple and just use the free D Link Android app and it works great :)

I run two webcams through my APEX, one on the display and one on the sump. Both are d-link DSC-910s. The frame rate anywhere outside my home network is poor, really just a series of stills. But I don't use them for pleasure viewing, just to check on things while I'm away and they work great for that.
