What would everybody like too see at Frag swap in Jan/Feb in Rochester???

Well, yes.

What we're aiming for here is to add value to the event in the form of education, information, or practical demonstrations. We'd like to make it appealing to new hobbyists as well as those with many years under their belts. People selling, buying, and those who don't need to do either. Something to bring the huge Rochester hobby community together and also attempt to inspire new members into the hobby and URS club.

Think demonstrations, discussions, seminars, vendors, product reviews, and the future of the hobby and URS involvement.

I wouldn't mind seeing a speaker on reef chemistry. It seems that no matter how long you are in this hobby its the one thing that people just dont get. Not to mention it would be nice to know what exactly is considered blue on salifert test kits

that sounds awesome..Ohh and some LPS that I can buy since I dont have frags to trade yet :)

How about a fragging demonstration? I always feel awkward and unsure when I frag something. I'd really like to see someone that knows what he's doing.

Being relativly new to the hobby of saltwater reef keeping and new to urs. I think it would be great if the more experienced members talked about their experiences on topics like salinity,ph,nitrates, nitrites ect... i would be very interested in going to workshops like this. since tad recommended this site i have learned alot and hope to continue to do so and contribute back sometime in the future.. so please make this happen. thanks ..will

I agree.

Spring would be best,
to have a big one.
Where a lot of people could come from areas even
farther away.

January thru March can be tough travel for those down in southern NY, out east coming west and even Buffalo.
If it's going to be a "comprehensive" style bigger "meet",
Spring would be best to bring more people together.

As well as the best climate for coral transports. (not too cold, not too hot)

If you want people new to the hobby to come, the best place is to talk to the news stations. I bet they would even send someone the day of the event.

I don't see a problem if you pre-heat your car, bring everything in an insulated cooler, and keep your car warm during travel.

I know a lot of people aren't keen on the winter swap idea but this thread is for constructive input on content for the event, not the timing.

Free samples would be nice. It's possible that vendors may donate items - carbon, food, test kits, etc. Whoever is organizing this could contact various suppliers. When my pond club (NFKPC) had our koi show this summer, our president sent a letter to different suppliers and received tons of donated items from post-it pads and markers to donated fish.

Could do an auction or drawings for higher end donated items. A question-answer seminar with experiened reefers would also be a plus.

Pices4u, This is a very constructive viewpoint. Transfering corals w/o planning can be very dissapointing for people that havent or are not prepared. Both fraggers selling their goods & persons taking them home after the swap. Be prepared to keep yoy livestock as warm as you can - both ways.

With all due respect

gotta be prepared. Thank God for Steve's foresight in giving me a big bag of warm water the other night. Sure needed it since a 1 hour drive turned into a 3 hour drive back to Rochester.

i think an auction or raffle would be cool. what about a tank drilling demo? as for calling the news, i think thats a great idea it cant hurt. and if they air it a good amount of people should show. nothing worse than a frag swap with 4 people

If you guy(s) can arrange a swap, I'd be happy to contact a few vendors and see if we can get a raffle going. This is something huge that can draw a crowd.

Rich- As much as I see where you are coming from, there's been lots of swaps in the winter months. We live in Upstate NY, since when does cold weather stop us from doing anything? ;) Heatpacks and studded tires are your friend!
