What would everybody like too see at Frag swap in Jan/Feb in Rochester???

I use a small container of hot water in a six pack cooler and have never had any problem keeping temperatures ok. When I buy frozen foods at a LFS, I use a common ice pack in the same cooler.

i think randy and the buffalo crowd do a great job. the reef crawl/frag swap has a good mix of info and entertainment. a drunk bus/ shuttle would be on my wish list.

Depending on what you have (frags) to bring,
carting corals is not always easy. Depending on what they are
and how much you want to bring. Amount and sizes, like any large stuff-
that takes up container space... etc.

Some people may have larger or numerous containers,
as well as a longer distance to travel than others.

So, I think either scenario could be at play &/or correct.

Pices4u: to your credit- The insulated type containers & heat packs work.

However, not nessesarily for everyone in every situation. They may not have enough of those particular type of containers(& heat packs)to bring what they want. Possibly over longer distances for some people as well.

Where as to Dick's(Diverdick's) credit: In warmer weather, one does not need those type of containers or the "heat packs".

Many insulated coolers are not really that large and even the very large ones are not capable of multiple levels in side unless modded.

You could use anything suitable to carry saltwater. I've often used large "Long" styro-foam containers from the aquatic trade. But they are not insulated, don't work as well in the cold weather. However, several of them are capable of carrying more than most coolers at a cheaper expense. Something many of us have from numerous years of coral, fish & Jumbo fish trade.(Crates)

Your both right to a point.

I guess I just support what Dick is saying because in warmer weather a lot more people from NY as in all of UPstate would find it a much better time to travel to a "larger" sized hobby meet up.

That doesn't mean that your method doesn't work. Especially for just one of the local standard frag trades that have been going on.

But the buz that has been going around with people for some time- is about running a larger area type of "show" or "Hobby Convention" as I like to refer to it as.

Having a frag swap in February and in the summer are not mutually exclusive. We can do both.

Those who are uncomfortable trying to transport and buy/sell frags in cold weather aren't being forced into anything.

This swap proposal started as a "checking interest" type thread/poll from a hobbyist to other local hobbyists because several of the Rochester shops are hostile towards the frag swap concept and we don't have the venue options of Buffalo or Syracuse.

This doesn't need to become a show or hobby convention. Bringing 50+ gallons of mixed water and buckets of corals is overkill IMO anyways.. It's apparent that there are several people opposed to the winter swap idea, but again this thread is a brainstorming session to make it a valuable event for those who brave the weather anyways.

Lets try to keep it on topic. If we move forward with it, we can post a FAQ about transporting livestock. If they can survive 25 hours on a plane and overnight shipping from online vendors, we can make it work for those travelling 2 hours in a car.

letzten Punkt, und ich werde draußen bleiben ..... sps überlebenden vs blühenden .... holen.

I absolutely will attend any local swap in the winter....its all good as I love the hobby like everyone here.

As for what I would like to see at a swap.....zoa fragging clinic & how to keep palytoxins out of my display while fragging a large colony (excess of 400 heads)

ok, that wasn't cool, translated - last point and I will stay out.....sps surviving vs. thriving....you pick.

My whole point in the beginning is one of patients for 8 weeks or so will provide you and yours a better, more fulfilling experience in bringing people together. Between the safe driving tips and heat pack solutions, I am not trying to be a wet blanket by any means. I will always support gatherings like this. To those who know me, I am dead serious about this hobby and am only trying to extend the olive branch, not putting the fire out.

Please keep up the good work.

heat packs and insulated six pack cooler standing by...and B&G? You drink said beer before you go.....and hide the receipts later.

SPS can easily thrive in winter conditions... turn on the heat in your car and everything will be a-ok.

I understand your concern but that's why we have swaps all year 'round. +1 to what Pisces said.

By far the best meeting/swap i've been to was held at the zoo in Rochester! Sanjay and Calfo (unfortunately no Borneman, he owes us one), polar bears taunting Sanjay during his lecture LOL, refreshments, great raffle (won an IC660).
It would be easier to get the LFS involved if they were formally asked. It would be up to them as to what they might want to sell.

Daycare and an open bar.

That could probably be arraigned for sure. Im up for drinks!!!

How i feel at this point is that we can make this well balanced. Too cold to drive to Rochester with frags? Then don't bring them. Come anyways for the experience. Im thinking 3 hours for convention. 2 hours prior for hobbyists to set up tanks if needed. Im thinking 9-11 setup. 11-2 meeting /swap / raffle at end.

Raffle for sure. I am personally donating some frags to raffle. Have a Q & A session for people new to the hobby. It can also be an open forum for some time. DIY gurus out there need to contact me. It would be great to have some hands on session if possible. I am looking for volunteers to speak about topics general and specific. Anyone interested in setting up please contact me in regards to details.

Thank you,

Jason

whats wrong with plugging an inverter into your cig lighter and dropping a heater and an mj400 into your cooler?

man... I was beginning to wonder if anyone was here long enough to remember that!

This thread seems to indicate a lot of newbies in our presence.
Frag swaps are fun but don't expect the local media to cover it... even if Borneman is a speaker.

Gary,
Have you seen the zoo tank lately?

I don't really think the issue is about the transportation of corals, i thinks it's more about the unpredictability of the weather for traveling attendees.

Everyone who brings a highend frag puts there name in a hat, then you pick names. First pick from hat, first pick from frags!
