What would you do if you had to setup a new tank. these are the only 2 options, i cant do any bigger than these :)

#1
72x24x24 180g with 32" stand

#2
72X24X20 150g with 36" stand

36" stand for me takes priority because I like big skimmers.
Is there a reason why you cannot get a 36" stand with the 180?

I agree with Greg.

I swaped my stand recently because I wanted a bigger skimmer.

The higher the better. Unless you go with an ASM skimmer. They are made not so tall.

Seeing as I don't know which measurement refers to what, I can't say for sure. AFAIC, the "deeper" (front to back") a tank is the happier *I* am...

Greg also has a point, however, in that short stands can really have a way of biting you in the (you know what).

You have a skimmer in mind for it, and will it fit either?

gregg...the canop is 14" high...so with 36" stand and 24" tank = 74" - just too tall for the room.

kernelangus...it's pretty common to list tank dimensions as follows:
length x width (front to back) x depth (top to bottom)

i want to skim the hell out of this thing, a friend recommended G-4X which is 30" tall.

how about you go w/a 72x30widthx20"height, then it'll be 180 still but lower....you'll also like the wider tank. i guarantee it!

Huh. That way of listing size is counterintuitive to me for some reason. I'm thinking width (length), depth (width) and height (depth).

*shrug*

Having TWO inches play for that skimmer would be tight IMO. Go with the higher stand...

My 2c.

Thank you for your order, please pull through.

With this set up, I won't think of up grade anymore, no regret.
And this is more comfortable proportions.

#2
72X24X20 150g with 36" stand

With this one, sump will hold more water, coral will receive more light..

C'mon what do you have a house full of midgets? How tall are you? 74" is only 6'2". The ceiling is at least 8'. The 180g w/ a 32" stand would require a person be < 5'tall to look at it without bending over. The top of the tank would be at 4' 8".

I'll go with #1 tank and #2 stand. Are you going to customize the tank or this is something you could get use? if it new I would go with a tank that is 72x26x22.

john37...i'd like to go wider but i cant - too big for the room.

greg...im not a midget..but i am vertically challenged :)

hahaha LOL

Go with the bigger stand!! The only thing I wish I could change about my tank is the stand height.

I would go for the tall tank on the tall stand too. You could comprimise if the total height is that big an issue and have 34" tall stand and a 22" tall tank.
