whats a good price for salt, delivered?

If you order through DFS don't let them use a freight company... Ordered 11 buckets back on the 22nd and I'm still waiting for SAIA to pull their head out of their butt.

Take a look at petsolutions.com. I ordered salt from them before Christmas, they were cheaper than DFS and they had free shipping.

I ordered 2 buckets of Salt and 4 bags of sand last Tuesday and they were delivered on Saturday :eek1:

The small items I ordered are still trickling in.

F&S had the Reef Crystals for the same price Solutions did when they had their sale going for the buckets. I think Solutions had the 200 gallon box on sale for the same price as the buckets which was a deal but I wanted the buckets.

they order them by the pallet to get this deal and it ticked off the other LFS owners . they could do the same but prefer to sell it for $89.00 ! can you guess why they only sell a few buckets a year ? ~ greed gets you nowhere ~

They call those loss leaders, and sadly many LFS folks don't understand the concept or potential return.

Short-sighted greed. Thats why I only buy frozen food from the PetCo here on 88th Avenue by the Home Depot. Thats the only thing I buy from any LFS anymore.

Aquamart is overpriced on pretty much everything - including their corals. Went there once to buy some 24W T5 bulbs - took ME over an HOUR of searching the back room BY MYSELF to find 6 bulbs that would work. They couldn't even be bothered to help me find the right color bulbs - and when I FINALLY found what I wanted - the boxes so old they had 10yrs of dust on them - there was no discount - but the price tags had been stickered over and over. When I got home I pulled the layers of stickers off. Seams they retag everything occasionally - because I found a sticker on a 460nm 24W bulb that read $12.95 - but the price I paid on the most recent sticker was $25.

Liquid Kingdom used to occasionally get some decent coral frags in - but haven't seen anything good in over a year. Their tanks are currently full of flat works - zillions of flat worms.
When I asked the owner if he would offer a discount on the corals - due to the flatworms - he said simply, "Nope. If you don't like flatworms we have some chemicals you can use to kill them before you put them into your tank." Geeee thanks!! -- uh nope, you can keep your infected corals buddy! A bucket of Oceanic costs $65!!

Fish den has the grossest tanks I've seen. Never any cool corals. If they happen to have anything even remotely nice they want $100 for that coral. Staff is less knowledgeable than ME - thats pretty bad.

Bought about 100 snails and crabs from Sherman tank. 80% of them died. And trust me, it's not my tanks. I'm a neat freak and all my water parameters are spot on. All my corals are vibrant and growing. My other inverts are healthy and growing well. But for some reason, despite a long 8hr acclimation period at stabilized temps, most all those inverts I bought from Sherman have died. I've had to dig around and take dead snails and hermits out of my tanks to avoid nitrate spikes from the rotting corpses. Boil the shells, remove the cooked carcass and then put the shells back in the tanks.

The rest of them suck just as bad. :uzi:

I buy online and I don't give it a second thought anymore. I'll support the retailers who support me. Recently bought a big bucket of Red Sea Pro Coral and got the $5 shipping deal from 2 Docs. Also bought some rebuild parts for a canister filter that got dropped. You can't find an intake tube for a HOB canister at any of the local stores. "We can order that for you." Yeah?!?! Well I can order it TOO and it'll come to my front door in 5 days - rather than make a trip back up here to your store and pay sales tax on it ++ your markup.

Far as I'm concerned - the LFS don't exist anymore unless it's a dire emergency. They have nobody to blame but themselves.

2nd that for most ,we have one that is new and really to reasonably priced .i have to go there because no one can compete ,not even close .

I wonder what it takes to become a dealer for all this stuff. I guess I have the room. I am sure the city would get their panties in a wad but just selling dry goods to a bunch of friends shouldn't cause much trouble. :D

all you need is a DBA but then you will have to deal with code enforcement and fire department and your residence will need to be commercial unless you can get a waver, jumping through hoops . then you wife will need to be excessively understanding with people coming over at all times sat and sun included . oh yes then there's the phone ringing off the hook too ! and last but not least the rude people that have you waiting for them to come and then they change plans without ever taking the time to call you . have fun with that and i am very sorry to rain on your parade but i saw it happen to a friend and it was simply hell .

I just ordered 2 boxes of 200g reef crystals from pet solutions for 49.99 each and free shipping since my order was over 99.00.I was useing seachem reef salt but am gonna give reef crystals another go.No one comes even close to this price and is why i buy almost all dry goods online.I was at one of the lfs near my house and they wanted 85.00 for a phosban 150 reactor!I dont mind spending a bit more for some things to support lfs's but that kind of pricing makes you want to ask if they have any bridges in stock.

yup if you have the time online is the way to go ! that is also why our economy is in such shambles but whats a guy to do ?

Not sure when you visited, but the bulbs I have seen are in the main store and are priced with any of the stores. Online is less, but shipping, convience and breakage is part of that cost. Coral frags starting at $10 seemed reasonable. The large corals also seemed fair. Dry goods seem fair also.
Working in retail I understand that they have to pay for the location, help, overhead that includes spoilage and loss of stock. I also like to be able to ask them for help, where the online people are not there for that. I will support AM as much as I can.
We all have our opinion.
As a member of MASC I also try to support those businesses that sponsor the club events etc.

Wife would be no problem, she lets me get away with murder. What the city doesn't know wont hurt them. Dunno if it's worth the hassle. I am thinking something more like a coop than a business. If I am fronting the money and storing the stuff I gotta make something but nothing like what a LFS has to.

By the way, I stole the logo from a pro 420 site and modified it.

if you go into business you might be breaking some copyright laws by using their logo......;)

I have to play devil's advocate here. Because we just lost our last LFS up here in Cheyenne and it really sucks that we have to drive to Colorado just for our fish emergencies. Yes we have petsmart or petco whatever it is, but it's not the same.

We do get a lot of our dry goods off the internet but take it from me I wish that I supported or LFS a little bit more just to keep them around.

If I did a legit business I wouldn't even think of using a feltched logo.
