Hello, I am looking to upgrade my Aqua Medic Turboflotor T1000 Protein Skimmer (in the sump). The tank is 75G with a smaller sump (mega-flow 3) I like the Octopus EXT-160 & the ASM G-1X. From what I've read ASM hasn't changed anything for years, its tried and true. Does it still require the mod? Octopus has had a few changes/upgrades, are the new pumps they are using any good? How are these twos support - anyone ever need support?
Thanks

I've never used a Reef Octopus, but I've heard mostly good reviews.

I generally like my ASM G1 -- it fit perfectly in my sump, which is why I bought it vs. some of the other larger skimmers. It doesn't need adjusted often, and I don't mind getting my hands wet when adjusting the riser tube. I was upgrading from a Seaclone 150 and the improvement was huge. Occasionally I have to clean out the pump's (Sedra 2500) venturi because it gets built up was salt. The collection cup lid is a bit of a pain to use in that it doesn't open and close easily... But I consider these minor gripes. There are several modifications out for it, but I haven't felt like I *need* to make the performance better, although admittedly I don't have a lot of exposure to many different skimmer and I lack a lot of experience. But as far as I can tell, it seems to be a good, simple skimmer that gets the job done.

I have an ASM G2 (Without any mods) on my 120. Works great. The only issue I had was the collection cup lid was hard to get off. I put a thin coat of vasoline on the lip and it goes on and off easily now.

+1

I use a G-2 on my main tank, 75gal, with the gate valve mod...works great and fine tunning is easy.

I have a G-3 on my frag tanks...about 100gal, it has the mesh mod and gate valve......A bit overkill but, i got it at a really good price.

Both lids were had to open till the addition of vasoline on the lid and o-rings

I have 2 G-2s on my bigger setup and a G-2 on one of my coral flats.

I love them. They are easy to use and place in most sumps. Once you get it going you never fuss with it.

ASM is also reasonably priced.

i have a ASM G3 on my tank and i love it, easy to adjust. as for the sticking lid i had that as well, so i just put it on and turn it just a tad so it doesnt pop off.

I have an ASM G-5x (unmodified) in the greenhouse and it performs as well as any other model I have tried. I have also used a bunch of 2's and 3's on maintenance accounts over the years without any problems.

I have not used any Reef Octopus models.

Wow, I'm surprised nobody uses an octopus. With so many ASM in use around here with good reviews why would I purchase anything else. ASM it is. Thank you all for your input, I appreciate it

Mike

Well I have both ASM g2 and Octopus ,while most aquarists like the built quality of the octo I found they both skim well. So its really up to what you want personally the prices went way up on the ASM and Octopus for the money and quality seems to be the preferred choice.
