Whats eating my seahorses

Hi G1mme & Steve,

I hope you guys can work with each other. Ask Steve for the paper he wrote on them and ask him how to raise them. He & Andre are the only people I know of that raise these seahorses.

Best of luck with them,

Tim

Hi Tim
I sent him a PM, but have had no reply.
I would have tried to organise to visit him to give him advice as a colleague is going to Knysna at some time in September to teach mammal training methods, so the trasnsport there would have been covered.
Regards Steve

Hi Steve,

I hope you make contact with him. You are allow to keep them by special permit? How does that work?

Tim

Public aquariums and research facilities are allowed to collect them on a special permit from the Department of Environmental Affairs, this permit would allow them to collect a limited number of syngnathids along with limited numbers of other marine life. They would also require to have certain specimens specified in the Threatened or Protected Species permit (TOPS). Currently no public aquariums in South Africa have collected Knysna seahorses for probably more than 10 years as the habitat falls within a South African National Park and permission would be required from them to collect in that area. This has not been granted as far as I know as SANParks believe the captive bred population is sufficient to support the educational needs of the public aquariums. The public aquariums support each other with providing specimens from successfully breeding aquariums to others that are less successful.
I believe G1mme must have permission from SANParks to display them as he is based in Knysna.
