how come when I type in www.worldwidecoral.com

...... sea in the city's website comes up?

I just happened to forget the "s" on the end and to my surprise.......I'm looking at Sea in the City's website instead of the site I was trying to go to.

at first, I thought one store bought the other out......or somehow merged into one business, but that was definitely not the case

Looks like they bought the domain name hoping someone would spell it wrong and end up there instead ;)

Little underhanded if you ask me, but I guess that's business right?

Sneaky? Practically every single company with an internet presence does the same thing and/or has had this done to their domain(s).

Also:

They had a year and some change to buy the domain sans the "s". Not to mention, it was registered by proxy - anyone could've purchased the domain and pointed it to Sea in the City.

I guess they bought the .net and pointed it to SITC also.

I suppose that is business......but pretty cut throat IMO considering they are both local stores.

I know several of the stores are helping each other out in various areas......that would seem to be a way smarter business move than trying to snipe customers by diverting people that are obviously trying to go to another stores site

I would really hate to see stores going at each other.....unless of course there was a price war :-D

It a pretty nice compliment though......

If I was WWC, I would be feeling pretty good to have a store so nice, that it would be worth while for another to buy a similar web address and direct it to their own :-D

"Sneaky"...."underhanded"...come on. Last time I checked we lived in a free market capitalist society. Many major corporations do the exact same thing, for the same reason. Namely, to limit the marketing exposure of a direct competitor, which despite what some may say, IS good for business. It is my understanding that many businesses have dozens of registered domain names, which may or may not direct back to a certain "main" site.

Anyway, just thought Id throw in my two cents. This isn't foul play in my book, just ordinary competition.

I think it is smart business...for all of us reefers...who hasn't gone to all the local stores anyways...? I personally don't even hit the websites except to find out when they are open...

I guess so.......it's just that I've never misspelled a website and gone to a competitors site......usually it's something COMPLETELY different, or not a site at all.

but dang......the store wasn't even open when either domain was purchased! Oh.....maybe they bought it to try to block the domain name

I suppose that just goes to show.....if you buy a domain name.....might as well buy all the ones around it also

For you people making the posts about all companies doing it so on and so forth, it's fine. But "IMO", "IMO", "IMO" how many times do I have to say my opinion, I think its dirty for a LFS to do that to another LFS. We are not talking about HUGE coorporations here.

that's true Mike!

That would be like WWC putting up a sign in front of SITC. I'm not saying that it wouldn't be good for business.......I'm just saying that's a pretty crappy thing to do! maybe the big guys do it......but when the mom and pop places start doing the same thing......then why the heck should we bother to "support our local stores"?

and who the crap would spend their money to buy domain names and point them at a competitors site?

In "my" opinion, I think it is wholly unfair to publicly discuss the internet marketing practices of a local business without having fact to back it up. The only fact ascertained here is that a domain name, similar to a competitor's, is linked, by PROXY, to a different site.

"My" opinion on this matter, is that this discussion has been pursued in an entirely negative demeanor, and has been directed in an accusatory fashion at SITC, without even knowing for certain who registered the website.

Do any of us know who SITC's internet marketing is outsourced to? It is pretty doubtful it is all done entirely in house.

Would you find it fair for someone to negatively remark about your company on a public forum, without even knowing the facts.

In "my" opinion, what has gone on here is even more inflammatory than the hypothetical internet marketing practices of any business.

I generally dont post on RC anymore, and havent for years. Ive just been a little fed up with all the animosity lately, generally perpetuated by those similar to the author of this thread.

Have a great day everyone, and try to ease up on the accusations and hostility.

Once again - there is no proof anyone at Sea in the City did this. None whatsoever.

I could buy WorldWideCoralsIsAFrontForKillingWhales.com and no one would ever know. :)

Ok, so we can say that MArcy or any of the worker actually did this, but why would someone not associated with SITC just buy up domain and forward all of them to SITC?
