I've confirmed that I have red planaria but I don't know if they would do this. Does it look like I have AEFW as well? Is the treatment the same for both?
A branch will lose color, turn purple and then bleach. I first noticed it on a branch that was partially shaded and was in an aria of the tank that wasn't getting enough light. I've since taken care of that problem only to discover the same thing happening to the rest of the colony that can't be blamed on bad lighting.
I'm also noticing brown spots at the intersection of a completely bleached portion and a purple portion of a branch. Could this be the egg clusters that I've been reading about?

AEFW, you can see the eggs very good in the 3rd pic. seen them many times.

agreed. AEFW's. I'd toss that out already. no point of keeping it if the entire colony is looking that bad. you should also examine your other acros for AEFW's.

Yup... confirmed it when I shot the colony with a baster. About a dozen came off. I'm gonna do that everyday 'till the eggs that are there now have gone through their life cycle and then hope for the best. Maybe I'll get a Wrasse.

your going to spread them out like that. then all your other acros is going to get infected by them. best bet it to scrape the eggs offs and do coral rx dips once a week until you see no more AEFWs. you might have to do this to all your other acros in your system as they might be infected. AEFW are tougher then redbugs. GL

562 is right all your gonna do is spread them. these things are VERY hard to get rid of. The best thing you can do is toss that coral. If you have other acros or millies i can about bet they are infected as well. I cut the ends of mine off that no eggs and tossed the rest even at that you have to keep dipping them at least once a week to get rid of the AEFWs.

Yep, they lay their eggs on the exposed part of the skeleton. Usually at the bottom just below the live tissue.

i dont mean to hijack, but what if you cant get your corals out? can you interceptor the whole tank? (240gal) and what are the steps.
i have a acro that i have had for a long time and i havent added any new corals in a long time, but it looks like that. i cant get it out to inspect it for AEFW but just in case, i want to know the steps.

interceptor only treats red bugs, not AEFW. if a colony is that far gone, best to remove the colony, frag off the unaffected tips and inspect to make sure there are no bite marks on the new frag, dip, and QT for 6 weeks, with repeated dips during QT and inspect to see no new bit marks or eggs. If it were me, i would just throw it away instead of risk losing more coral
