What's in a flash?

I have a Canon XSi. I'm looking, just browsing really, for an external flash. What's the deal? Besides power, what's the difference? I see flashes for $25 to $500? Is there a no frills version of Canons Speedlite? What would I be missing with a less expensive model?

The articles I linked you to should answer your direct question as well as all of your indirect questions. Keep in mind the 580ex II and 430ex II are out now. While they aren't described in that link, researching them elsewhere should be easy after you absorb some of that information. For you I would recommend the 430ex II.
