Dr Roy,

We are all very greatful for your insight and help in IDing, caring for and generally learning more about (IMHO) the coolest lifeform in the Sea, for that thanks in advance.
I was wondering, though, could you shed some light on the actual meaning and dirrenetiation between the sub-divisions of Onodactylus, Gonodactylus,Neodactylus,Haptosquilla,Lysio....etc...

If I spelled any wrongly, forgive me,but perhaps that would be cleared up with some help as well.
I, for one, am fascinated by the different little families that the Stomatopods fall into, and I would be very greatful for any help in figuring out what the differences are between the Mantis Shrimp.

As a side, any help/info that you could provide regarding my little G. Viridis would be great. I'd like to know where he came from (generally), what sort of environment I should create,etc...So far, he has a big LR 'castle' that he seems to love excavating out (he has knocked out 3 'windows' and dig much in the way of trenches and tunnels.

Gonodactylus mean kneed appendage so named because of the inflated knob on the dactyl. Odontodactylus is so nameed because it has teeth on the inside of the dactyl. Neogonodactylus are all very similar to Gonodactylus, but they are all from the New World.

I just realized that I forgot to give the Etymology of Haptosquilla. It is from the Greek "Hapto" - to touch and refers to the appressed submedian teeth of the telson. "Squilla" refers tp stomatopod.
