What's in a sump?

For my tank I will have a 20 gallon long fuge and a 30 gallon sump. The LFS says to put bio balls in the sump for wet/dry. But it seems a lot of people don't like bio balls. So what do you put in the sump besides a skimmer and a return pump?

My first section has the filter sock and GFO reactor, second section has my skimmer and the third section is the return. You can also have your heaters in there so you can have a cleaner looking tank.

My second chamber is stuffed with live rock rubble. Amazing tube worms, pods, and all sorts of life. Try to get a little scoop of sand from as many fellow reefers as you can for the fuge. Chamber #3, the refugium has a four inch sand bed, and more live rock with a big ball o chaeto rolling around in it. Dispose of the bio-balls properly, they make great cat toys!

I have a 3 section sump, the right side is my fuge, middle is return and left is skimmer. I also have my heaters and all probes for the Apex. Please dont put bio balls in your sump they can be great or a real pain in the behind. You want something that requires little upkeep and once you get your sump established the only thing you will have to do is clean your return and your skimmer. Good luck.
