What's in my torch?

I noticed today there is small white "cylinder" in the center of one of my black torch heads. Coming from the "cylinder" is what appears to be a feather duster??

These are the best pics I could get since I had zoom all the way in...Is this normal? The torches otherwise seem happy and healthy.

Likely a small barnacle- it lives among the polyps, attached to the calcium "skeleton" underneath. Harmless and common.
