What's in the future!?

I love my Tunze products and the customer service that accompanies them, I'm interested in what types of new/updated products we can expect in the future!

Not much on the immediate horizon, in general we work on a 2 year development cycle with new releases at Interzoo, so Interzoo 2014 will be the next slew of products. Their is a small chance that by MACNA I will be able to show the products that are the furthest along and closest to release which are.

9001- replaced 9002 and looks like a more compact 9004, it is even smaller than the 9002. This should be ready early 2014.

7097- multicontroller for the LED's, this was supposed to be ready much earlier this year but the bluetooth connectivity as well as development of an android and iOS app have set us back a bit but by November they should be ready.

Revised LED's, the LED's will get an upgrade in intensity due to better LED's as well as some additional colors. These should also be ready around November.

We have many more products in the works and they will likely all be shown at Interzoo though some will not actually be released until fall 2014.

Sounds like a solid line of development.

What is the intent/focus of the LED's in development? Stand alone reef lights, supplemental, freshwater/planted, fish only?

Has there been much talk about a full function controller? Is it viable?

Bit by bit we are working toward larger LED lights but we want to stay with a plastic construction since we have our own molding capacity, as the LED's get more efficient and as we work with plastic composites to find those with more capacity to dissipate heat we get a higher and higher intensity. For now they are limited to smaller tanks as primary lighting, 30 and below, and for supplemental on larger tanks.

We still have a concept for a full function controller, but we go back and forth on this idea always remembering what Norbert Tunze had said, never make such a product. The primary concern is all of your eggs are in one basket, if that one controller fails, you will have a catastrophe. With that said, electronics have improved and more often then not the same catastrophe would have wiped out all individual controllers as well, such as a flood or spill when all controllers are next to each other. I wouldn't say this is imminent but it gets closer with every development cycle.

Well sign me up if/when that development cycle comes around!

Thanks for the time Roger, much better than getting answers along the lines of "We do not discuss products which may or may not be in development."

Nice to see that Tunze is listening to what the customers want in regards to the nano skimmers either the 9002 was too small or too big, so now it is both the new 9004 and now the 9001, and now for the 3rd group will the 9002 still be made?

No, the old nano comline body has to be retired, it was a combination of an off the shelf extruded plastic body and many molded parts assembled by hand and the high degree of hand labor slows production and increases costs, the 9002 is the last remnant of this old body, with the older 6206 nano wavebox, the amount of hand labor was so high that we could build a large filter like Skimmer Kit 15 in the same number of steps and man hours. The 9001 will fill the niche, it will have the same footprint of a 9002 only shorter in height.

We have offered a battery back up solution since 2008, the 6105.500 safety connector. While it is essentially a DIY connector (you provide the battery and charger) we have no plans to offer a complete unit as shipping batteries is very expensive due to weight and we feel that the DIY solution is more flexible as it allows the use of a solar panel and the swapping of batteries in an emergency, even disposable lantern batteries can be used.
