whats in your overflows?

Used to be bryopsis in my overflows until I made some acrylic covers for them and painted them black. Now nothing's in them.

Billions of feather dusters sponges, and lots of coraline. for a few days both my flame and red margin wrasse. I just stuck my arm in with a net and swiped at them until they jumped back into the display :)

I ask cause I still have bio balls in mine and I want to get rid of them. The only reason they are in there in the first place is to deaden the sound of the water. Anybody else have this problem or have any solutions

watchman goby, peppermint shrimp, a cuke, couple of snails and somehow a hermit.

To answer your question about water noise, I just use multiple overflow standpipes. The primary one has a gate valve on it to adjust and create a full siphon with the water level just under the overflow teeth. This makes it dead silent. The secondary standpipe is just about 1/4" higher in case the primary gets a snail or something in it. There is actually a third emergency standpipe just because I have a bunch of holes, but only really need one backup.

Just a note. If you remove the bioballs, remove them slowly. Do not remove them all at once.

lol I think we're probably only talking about a handful or two of bioballs. What's the cumulative surface area there, 5 square inches?:eek2:

My overflows are noisy as well. Very distracting when watching TV. Kinda like a gurgling type of noise. Didn't do that when I first got it. Maybe just cause of buildup? Any ideas on how to cut down on the noise? Thanks ;)

tagging along to see any ideas to reduce the noise. I have the BioCube so standpipes not applicable. Tank is in the office so I need to make it as quiet as possible. Bad enough with the chiller and light fans.

Atm I have the skimmer return, chiller return, ATO sensor pipe, and return pump in the left section. The skimmer pump and chiller pump. Right section empty.

LOL bioball surface area not going to do a whole lot unless your tank has no rock, no sand, and is only 1 gal. O_o

:D You are right. I totally misread. Would be hard to get a lot of balls in the overflow huh.

I set up mine as a mini fuge before going down to the main sump and fuge. It has deep sand bed and live rock rubble. With tons of worms, pods, and feather dusters.
