What's the best deal?

Which do you think is the better deal for a first DSLR? The Canon Rebel xt 8.0 mp with kit lens for $374.95 or the Nikon D40 with kit lens for $399.95. Both of these deals are refurbished from the factory offered by adorama. I would be using the kit lens for quite a while as just buying the camera will be a stretch. They also have the Canon Digital rebel 6.3 mp with kit lens refurbished for $349.95. Any and all opinions are appreciated. Thank you, Fred:strooper:

Go with the Nikon:D It's pretty much personal preference as to which brand you want to go with. Both are very good. The mega pixels in the 3 that you listed don't matter unless you will be printing large pictures.

I think the kit lens and the flashes are a bit better on the Nikon, but thats just according to Ken Rockwell. :) I'm also biased having just bought a D50 (kind of wish I would have went with a D40, but oh well... no big deal). I'm also going to be using my kit lens for a while, so I feel ya there. My first purchase will be an SB-400 flash, though.

Anyway...

I say the D40. :)

Excellent site I am definately leaning towards the D40 every time I make up my mind new evil thoughts pop into my head. Thanks for the help everyone. Fred:strooper:

lol - buy the camera that feels best in your hand. They both are capable of producing great pictures when used properly.

p.s. IMO Ken Rockwell is an idiot.

Care to elaborate?

You'll wind up spending far more on accessories (lenses and such) than you ever will on your camera body and all the accessories are brand specific, so to me it boils down to what accessories you want to use. And that boils down to what you want to shoot.

By and large, there are similar lenses and whatnot across the brands, but if you ever think you might want to get into high magnification macro consider the Canon MP-E 65mm 1x-5x lens. It's great glass and a really convenient way to get high magnifications (though with very small working distance) and Nikon doesn't offer anything like it.

If you just want a walking-around camera, then just go with either. Both brands are fantastic for that sort of thing.
