I have used the watergeneral units from filter direct on ebay for years. The 6 stage unit they sell is refillable and is a very good water system for the price.
I don't think we can post ebay links anymore, so here is the model i have.
WaterGeneral RO6100+DI 2 OUTPUT REVERSE OSMOSIS RO + DI
It is $150 and includes a pressuer tank. Don't forget to buy extra DI resin when you order.

The Typhoon III from AirWaterIce. I've had ebay units and the typhoon. The ebay units work well, but are not as well constructed, do not have pressure cut-offs (you'll need if you ever decide to put in a top-off system) and I've found them to be slower than the typhoon even at the same gpm rating.

I plan on getting the unit from AirWaterIce.com, eventually, assuming I don't come across some sort of deal before then. To me, you can't beat good customer service. And I have setup 2 units from them for other folks and had great help, etc...

I got the typhoon III from air water ice and it was well worth the money. it was $225 shipped, and it is a lot faster than my ebay jobbie that was rated at a higher gallons per day output. it is very well constructed and the customer service is awesome. the unit they originally sent me was not functioning properly, they answered my email within 10 minutes and shipped me a new top unit (without the filters) no questions asked. They included a return slip so all i had to do was switch out the top units and send the nonfunctioning one back. with the extra goodies the typhoon comes with (like tds meter and pressure meter) it makes it essentially the same price as the ebay ones and it is a much better unit.

Scott,

By far the best deal and best product for that money is Aqua-Safe Systemt out of canada. I recently replaced the filters on an airwaterice unit and the Aqua-Safe system had more filters and better filters and an easily refillable DI system. They do have the auto system TimV talked about. It has a sediment filter, 2 coconut carbon filters that go down to 1 micron then the 100GPD RO and refillable DI filkter plus a post filter for the removal of any gas that gets through. It also comes with a 4 gallon tank and pressure gage and faucet for $125 shipped! I think it is called a maximus filter. It is by far the best deal for the money and I think the best for any money.

Plus their customer service is perfect.

if anyone is interested. I have a source here in town (medical supply people) that can hook you up with a RO/DI unit that takes a garden hose attachment. It can put out 40 gal about as fast as your garden faucet can put out. about 5 mins or so. this is good for people who needs a lot of water for mixing. PM me for number.

My original e-bay unit was from aqua safe canada. It was a decent unit, but not great. Mine was supposed to be 75 gpd but never produced more than 40. The 75gpd AirWaterIce produced just about right on that number.

BTW, stay far, far away from 100 gpd units if at all possible. If you do decide to go with aqua-safe, see if they offer a 75gpd option. The membranes in 100 gpd units have horrible rejection rates so you'll go through DI cartridges about 4-5 times faster than you would with 75 gpd.

So, as long as the membrane is 75 gpd. The Aquasafe ro di should be a good deal. Right?

Or what's in the same price range?

on the memberane....no it depends on the maker not just the GPD rating....

i would highly suggest AWI great filters, great customer service, and if you let them know you are a RC member they will give you a free tds pen or a float valve, its your choice

too bad walter and AWI have been banned from RC!

I have a question, do the actual units themselves really make that big of a difference or is it more to do with the cardtridges? Could I put a better brand cartridge into my current cheap unit and make it work better? Heres the unit i bought:

http://www.abundantflowwater.com/html/aquarium_filters.html

it's the Reef Master 100 GPD + Double pass DI unit.

I actually bought mine during the 'summer special' and got it for $129.99, not the $219 they have listed now.

I think it's more the RO membrane then the cartridges. Another thing i do to get better use from mine, is to take the DI cartridge from it's bracket, and stand it up. The DI resin seems to go alot further. When they are laying down, they tend to get a channel in the top and don't do much good.
