I'm closing on three months now. I'm not going to lie, I'm having withdrawal-like symptoms :D
Frankly, I'm surprised it took that long.

I was pretty stressed out... and took a trip to Europe.

I was only freshwater at the time... and I was still stressed out.

I didn't lose any fish, but I did lose a couch to my dogs..

well nick im pretty sure you have everyone beat, But atleast you have someone reliable, and trustworthy to watch over your tank.Do you get any kind of leave anytime soon? i know my brother inlaw has been in kosahavo for a while now and is getting a weeks leave i think. Then again it might have something to do with his wife about to have there first child . Thanks for all you do!

If I get leave, it will likely be for two weeks and would probably be sometime between February and June. It takes 5-7 days just to get to and from this place but luckily travel time doesn't count as part of my leave time.

Oh yeah, and your right, I'm very lucky I have a good tank sitter ;)

When my wife and I went to the Caymen Islands we were gone for alittle over 1 week. Talk about worried because I had my dad take care of my tanks and he doesn't know anything about tanks.LOL

He did a great job. Did everything I asked and everyone was happy.

I was away from mine for almost 3 months it was like 2 months and 2 weeks.... I took an extended vacation in Florida. :D Unfortunately i didnt have someone as good as you do to watch over my tank. When i came back i had a HUGE aiptasia problem, and had also lost a couple of fish (rip: potters angel and purple firefish) from the salinity being way to high. Just be glad you have someone as knowledgeable as you do to watch over your tank.
Maybe you can look at it like this...... since you cant see your tank now everyday, when you do finally get to your are gonna be amazed with how much everything has grown. it may just be worth it being away from it for that long just to see how much it has matured when you do finally make it home.

Mine always looks better when I'm gone for a while. I don't think it likes me digging around in there.

We went to Florida for 11days. The saltwater tank did fine...My freshwater apple snail breeding tanks...not so much. The biowheel got overloaded and started producing a horrible slime. Our tanksitter didn't realize it until it was too late. I lost over 1,000 selectively bred snails. It was absolutely horrible. I cried and threw up for days.

I expect a lot of fragging will be needed in a year

Yes, that is definitely correct. You have so much stuff crammed into the tank right now that it's getting really difficult to maneuver things! The frag tank is getting quite full already (from little 'accidents' I've had....

I'm sorry you miss your tank so much -- I'll have to take more pictures or something.

Hurry home, the tank misses you too.

I left it for a week but Saltyshoe did a great job looking after it. Anyone on the Eastside should have him look after it for them.

I've only left mine for a few days when I went to OR. for my best friends wedding.

Nick, I can understand your point here. Your thousands of miles away man. But your Mrs. is doing a great job and has a large group of reefer's at her side if she needs help. :)

I just had to revive this thread. Its been 6 months now for me and I've got the itch bad. The tank is going good under the care of Mrs. Reeferhead but it doesn't look like I'll be getting any leave now so it will likely be a year in total by the time I see her and the tank again. :(

Sorry to hear this, Nick:( It will be great when you finally do get to see it though.

Yeah, it kinda sucks. Since were technically only "scheduled" to be "in-country" for nine months the Army isn't required to send us home on leave. However, my buddies that are doing the same mission in other areas of Afghanistan are all going home for 10 days. We were short on personnel from the start and just have too much going on. Luckily though, since my last deployment was only a few years ago, when I get back I'm getting a lot of bonus leave. The way it looks, if I get back in mid-August as scheduled, I won't have to go back to work until November! :D

Are you in a more remote location than your buddies?

2 1/2 months of vacation would be sweet!

yeah, its pretty much the wild west out here, very remote

Hope you stay safe. Afghanistan can be awfully desolate looking but still has a certain beauty. The Taliban and extremists have just screwed everything up there.
