what's the natural lifespan of a clam?

Not that I'm worried imminently: my crocea is well-expanded and has put on 4-5 rows of scutes this year. But I'm told they max out at 5" and this is pretty well where mine is going to be if it grows as it has for the next few months. Do they then live long and prosper, or do they check out soon after reaching max?

Excellent. I'm pretty well bang-on with the params, being a corals tank, but I feed phyto for the mandarin's pods, and the clam is really doing very well, to judge by the year's growth. It never has attached, repositions itself to suit, on the sand, which turns out to be where it shows to best advantage, too, so after two attempts to install it in the rocks, it just lives where it wants to. Long may it thrive.

Thanks for the advice.

so long as nothing kills them i dont see them ever dying....

never?

there isn't any real data on how long clams can live, but there life span surely isn't infinite. the Gigas in the Waikiki Aquarium are around 20 years old.

It'd be interesting to have a thread on "how old is the oldest clam in your tank?"

Im pretty sure that monster gigas at waikiki is the oldest one in captivity.

oldest known "cultured" clam in captivity

are you sure? I thought it was just the longest kept (documented at least). Where the heck did Carlson get a cultured clam 20+ years ago?

they started culturing clams in the 70's(as this dudes getup will attest to:)

let me look for where this is stated

I wonder if it's a literary misinterpretation. The clam is captive "grown", not necessarily captive created. I wonder if they were trying to infer it is the largest and oldest one that was grabbed out of the ocean yesterday. But maybe not, what the hell do I know. I will shoot an email to Dr Carlson, and see what he says.

Now, lets continue the discussion on that guy- it looks like some of his hair slipped down off his forehead and landed on his lip.
