What's the purpose of a FWD? What is pinched mantel disease?

Just bought my first clam about two weeks ago without doing research. It is a crocea clam. I was reading the various threads and wanted to know about these 2 topics. Thanks

a FWD is a treatment for irritants, parasites. its very stressful for the clam and should be considered a last resort.

Pinched Mantle is a condition caused by a unknown protozoan. a lot of things are still up in the air about PM but i think we are getting closer to an effective treatment for it.

FWD is very useful in many saltwater aquarium creature including clams and most fishes. Since these guys can tolerate freshwater for a brief period of time while many small parasites can, it is a good way to eliminate the parasite from its host. You can literally see little crap drop out of the clam when you do the dip. Make sure the water is at same pH level as your SW though. But like Chris&Barb said, it is very stressful to any creature and should be the last resort.
