Whats the smallest frag you started out with that grew???

Just curious on what were some of the smallest frags people have grown. I have this tiny acro frag and wondering if people have started out with smaller?

If you are talking about propagating in the same system, it is 1/2 of an inch. But if you are looking to see what is the smallest size frag that you can buy, 1 inch is about as small as I would go. A 3/4 inch frag will work if your system is up to par.

In order to get the most out of a small frag, glue it on it's side. This allows it to encrust much faster and the frag will turn out much better that way. It might take a little bit longer before you see any size but this is the best way to turn a frag into a mini colony, then to a colony.

The acro on the right...when I first got it it was about a quarter of an inch-->

Then it grew-->

this is very solid advice!!

This purple Pocillopora was only a pinhead size (few polyps) about year ago.Now is baseball size and it is killing a branch of my Acro next to it.

+1 on one polyp. When i was mounting this milli i broke a tiny arm off and figured what the hell ill just toss it on the same plug. 2 Months later the momma is taking over haha.

I snag small frags all the time and grow them out.

Less than an inch in December.

Here in AZ colonies are far too expensive and shipping has gotten way too expensive.

A spec or so.. I had this killer maricultured piece that went up in smoke the first couple days I got it. I was really bummed and ****ed because it was a really stunning piece that I managed to cherry pick from WS It was the "pride" of the lot. After it died (I tried fragging it) I decided as a lesson to myself not to buy anymore SPS i would leave it in the tank. Over the course of a couple months some other coral were put in place and obstructed my view of of it, one day I had my pumps off and I was looking down and saw this NEON green puddle growing in the back of the tank. Now it's about 1-2" of encrusted base hopefully it will start branching and growing back again over the next couple months. I honestly don't even remember what it looked like anymore, I just remember it was stunning.. can't wait for it to grow into a "frag" or a mini colony.

I have two tiny pieces of Cali Tort on frag plugs right now. I pulled a rock out of the tank and mounted the tort with purple two-part epoxy. I let it sit on the kitchen counter for probably 15 minutes and then wet to put it in the tank and it fell off onto a hardwood floor. I picket up two pieces that are probably 1/4" and put them on a frag plug. They've got a couple polyps so I'm hoping they'll grow.

I've also got a piece of Ponape Birdnest that is the size of a pea right now. Cleaning the tank one day and knocked the Kent scraper into the tank where it broke off a couple pieces of the birdnest. I put two on frag plugs but didn't see the tiny one. A few weeks later I looked in the tank and saw this piece sitting on the sand. It's been three months, it's the size of a pea now, and it has good color and poly extension.

'Incredible Hulk' Acro--1/09. Sized can be determined by plug.

'Incredible Hulk' Acro--3/11. Approx. 10". Plug is still down there.

I also once had an acro grow spontaneously from a piece of live rock so technically my smallest 'frag' was cellular. No photos of that one though.

I broke an axial coralite off of a frag of A. efflourescens - maybe there was another polyp as well - 2 polyps tops. I thought - what the hell... give it try. It's now maybe 3/4" around and beginning to encrust pretty quickly. It's taken awhile though - 6 or 8 months.

Ive brought a few back from the dead with just a polyp or two. here is the only one I can find documentation on as I dont usually take pics of near dead frags. :) It got down to just those three polyps that look the best before it stopped dying and started to grow again. Took it over a year to even get back to small frag size. Its around 6" across now
