Ok Im moving my tanks soon. My 125 has ich I know for sure. My rock that is in it is beautiful and I dont want to get rid of it. I dont care about the sand. I will be getting 300lbs new live sand for my new tank anyways.

Q: Does the ich stay in the sand/water/rock, all 3, what?

I have heard many diffferent theories about how to properly eradicate it. Im hoping the move will help to finish it off once and for alll


My new tank is a 300 that will be here 2 weeks from monday. I have a 90 g and a 125 g and a 20g all to QT fish until then. What do you guys think the best thing to do is??

Q: Should I put all the fish in the 125g, no rock no sand for 2 weeks with meds to kill anything they might have on them?

Q: And then put all my rock and snails and stuff like that in the 90g and let it sit for 2 weeks?

yes,,will stay in the water for up to 48 hours then die if nothing to encyst on.
stay in rock unless rock is dried out.

there are many different theories from 'one day you see it next day it's gone' to 'i fed the magic potion and it's gone'.
however, 2 methods that are not theory but rather proven facts are:
copper treatment
hypo treatment

What do you guys think the best thing to do is??

either:
1. hypo treatment- at least 6 weeks after last spot is gone
2. treat with copper for 3 weeks and ensure fish have displayed no sign of parasite for min of 6 weeks.

ensure to keep infested rock/sand away from fish for min of 8 weeks

So Im getting all new sand for my new tank..........what should I do with my rock???? I have abut 100lbs of nice rock I dont want to get rid of............do i need to let it sit by itself for a month or what??
 
Personally I would leave the rock and sand fishless for a minimum of 4 weeks, 5 or 6 to be safe. Medicate the fish for 4-6 weeks in a seperate tank.
 
Any way to speed up the time it takes for the rock to rid itself of ich? If it has no hosts wont it die off rather soon? Why 8 weeks for the rock?
 
certain stages of the lifecycle you are confused with..
best to read up on it a bit.
it's possible they may all hatch within 6-7 weeks..but for an additional week there is that much more certainty.

only other option is to dry the rock out..but not sure how long it needs to be dry..maybe 48 hours.
 
I dont want to sound like Im repeating myself, but Id like some peoples thoughts on this:

What if I set the tank up, new water, fresh new sand, and let the rock sit by itself for 3 weeks.........whats the likelihood that ich will return in my new set-up. Is it 100% for sure or just maybe?

I can see you're getting pretty desperate, but don't risk it. There are no stats on 100% vs "just maybe" for what you're doing, I would just follow the advice the guys gave above.
 
If your "live sand" is truely live there is a chance it could contain ick. I am pretty sure this is how I got ick in one of my tanks. It showed up after introduction of "live sand".

This looks like a good opportunaty for some patience and starting with an ick free tank. Copper the fish seperate and let the new tank sit for 6 - 8 weeks without fish is the best choice I think.

But unless you plan on strict quarantining procedures going forward it is not worth it. If you know you can not do proper QT on all stuff you add in the future just setup the tank and keep the water quality high is my advice.

I have Ick in my reef tank but by keeping good water quality and well feed fish it has not been a problem. My fish only tank has a few fish (puffer and power blue tang) that forced my hand and required treatment and now I plan to never add anything to that tank without serious QT.

Let me clear things up.......I in no way meant 2 leave the rock dry for three weeks, I meant leave it alone, with no fishes for three weeks, in a tank all its own.

Im prepared to QT all new arrivals, and definitely want to so all this doesnt happen again.


I have no problem letting the tank sit fallow for weeks, its the other people in my life that cant understand it....Im constantly battling with my parents ( yeh Im 23 and live at home, I know its sad) to make them understand what Im doing. They just about had simultaneous heart attacks when I told them I was setting up 2 tanks ( 90 and 125 ) just to QT fish. They dont understand that at all. Trust me telling them I had ordered a 300 g was a nightmare!!!! I dont know if I can get them to be cool with having all these QT tanks all over the house. They have absolutely no idea what Im talking about when I say "My fish have ich, I have to quarantine and separate them for 2 months!". They have NO idea what Im trying to deal with.

Yes im only 23 but have over 10 yrs experience.........I dont consider myself a newbie, or I wouldnt bother with a 300g!! Thanks for eveyones help, this site is great!! i dont know what Id do w/o it!!!! Talk to u guys later

LMAO!!...

keeping the rock wet on it's own for only 3 weeks may take care of a certain % of c.irritan cysts..i could not even guess at what that % could be. 4 weeks would be the utmost minimumif they all hatch by the time they are supposed to..
BUT... i would certainly not recommend tossing the fish right in there right after that.. you want to be reasonably sure no parasites remain encysted.

IMO- 6 weeks is the min but a bit light
7 is not wrong
8 should be good to go; any longer than that and it becomes ridiculous.

if you wanted you could just use 2 tanks... put the rock in the new tank when it gets there..and just use the 90g to qt the fish.
