You can cycle a tank without any live rock at all (hence my initial confusion.) Throw in a raw shrimp or two to get the cycle started, the bacteria will find it's way in there. Throwing in a piece of live rock is a good idea though. It'll seed the more complex life like sponges, feather dusters, pods, and all that.

ive always been excited to put a piece of live rock in the tank and see what kind of hitch hikers I get. Obviously I'd want a positive grab bag.....It'll be like Christmas everyday

Yea LR bring good hitch hikers but it also can bring bad ones
